Easy Gnocchi in Brown Butter Sage Sauce: A Weeknight Revelation

Hi everyone, Cade here, and today I’m thrilled to share one of my all-time favorite dishes: this phenomenal 10-Minute Gnocchi in Brown Butter Sage Sauce. If you know me, you know gnocchi holds a special place in my heart. In fact, during our trip to Italy, I made it my mission to order gnocchi at least once every single day! It was Carrian who first introduced me to this delightful pasta by text, as we brainstormed dinner ideas while I was still at work. It sparked an obsession that continues to this day!

We’re incredibly excited to partner with Walmart to shine a spotlight on Sam’s Choice Italia Gnocchi. Trust us, you are going to fall in love with it just like we did!

For those who share my passion for gnocchi, you understand it’s a dish where quality truly matters. I’m quite particular about my gnocchi; it’s easy to be served a poor-quality version that disappoints. That’s why we were so pleasantly surprised when we sampled various brands and discovered the exceptional quality and diverse assortment offered by Sam’s Choice Italia Gnocchi. Each piece is meticulously hand-crafted in Italy exclusively for Walmart. This dedication to authentic Italian culinary tradition means not only immense pride in the production but also an unwavering attention to detail, resulting in a texture that is absolutely spot on. And the best part? It’s all available at a remarkably affordable price, making authentic Italian flavors accessible to everyone.

This recipe isn’t just easy; it’s a testament to how a few high-quality ingredients can create a truly memorable meal in minutes. It’s perfect for those busy weeknights when you crave something comforting and elegant, but don’t have hours to spend in the kitchen. The richness of brown butter, combined with the earthy aroma of fresh sage, transforms simple potato gnocchi into a sophisticated dish that tastes like it came from a fine Italian restaurant.

Simple Ingredients for Irresistible Brown Butter Gnocchi

One of the beauties of this recipe is its simplicity. You don’t need a long list of exotic ingredients to create something truly spectacular. Here’s all you’ll need to make this delectable gnocchi in sage butter sauce:

  • Sam’s Choice Italia Potato Gnocchi: The star of our dish! Its tender texture and authentic Italian craftsmanship provide the perfect base for our savory sauce. Using a high-quality pre-made gnocchi like this ensures a quick and foolproof meal every time.
  • Unsalted Butter: The foundation of our brown butter sauce. Using unsalted butter allows you to control the seasoning precisely, preventing your dish from becoming too salty. It’s essential for achieving that deep, nutty flavor.
  • Fresh Sage: This herb is non-negotiable! Fresh sage leaves are crucial for infusing the butter with its distinctive earthy, slightly peppery aroma and flavor, which perfectly complements the gnocchi. Dried sage simply won’t achieve the same vibrant taste.
  • Salt and Pepper: Basic seasonings that elevate all the other flavors. Seasoning to taste ensures your dish hits the perfect balance.
  • Parmesan Cheese: A final flourish of nutty, salty goodness. Freshly grated Parmesan melts beautifully and adds a layer of sharp, umami flavor that ties everything together.

With just these few pantry staples and a package of quality gnocchi, you’re just minutes away from an Italian-inspired meal that feels incredibly gourmet.

Crafting Your Sage Butter Gnocchi: A Step-by-Step Guide

This fresh sage and brown butter gnocchi is not only delicious but also incredibly simple to prepare, making it ideal for even the busiest schedules. Here’s a detailed look at how we create this fantastic dish:

  1. Begin with the Brown Butter: Heat a sauté pan over medium heat, adding all of the unsalted butter. For best results, use a light-colored skillet; this allows you to easily monitor the butter’s color as it browns, which is crucial for preventing it from burning. Continue to cook for approximately 5 minutes. During this initial phase, the butter will melt and then begin to foam, indicating that the water content is evaporating.

  2. Achieve Golden Perfection: Once the butter is foaming, increase the heat slightly to medium-high. Continuously whisk or stir the butter. This constant motion is vital to prevent milk solids from sticking to the bottom of the pan and burning, which can impart a bitter taste. Keep a very close eye on the butter; it can go from perfectly browned to burnt in a matter of seconds. You’re looking for a rich, amber color and a distinct nutty aroma.

  3. Prepare the Gnocchi: While your butter is browning, fill a separate saucepan with water and bring it to a medium-high boil. Once the water reaches a rolling boil, add a generous pinch of salt (just like you would for pasta) and gently introduce the gnocchi. Give them a quick stir to prevent sticking. Gnocchi cooks incredibly fast; it typically needs only about 1 minute. You’ll know it’s ready when the gnocchi floats to the surface. Promptly drain the cooked gnocchi in a colander.

  4. Combine and Crisp: As soon as your butter has reached that beautiful amber hue and nutty fragrance, immediately add the drained gnocchi and fresh sage leaves to the sauté pan. Stir everything gently to ensure the gnocchi is thoroughly coated in the fragrant brown butter and sage. Reduce the heat to medium and continue to cook, tossing occasionally, until the gnocchi achieves a lovely crisp exterior. This step is key for adding a delightful textural contrast to the tender interior.

  5. Serve and Savor: Transfer the crispy brown butter sage gnocchi to a serving platter. Finish with an extra dash of salt and freshly ground black pepper if desired, and a generous grating of Parmesan cheese. Serve immediately and enjoy this incredibly simple yet profoundly flavorful dish!

Frequently Asked Questions About Gnocchi

How to Pronounce Gnocchi

It’s a common stumbling block, but the correct Italian pronunciation is “nyawk-kee.” Many people pronounce it incorrectly, but since Italians are the masters of this delightful dish, I always stick to their authentic pronunciation. Just so you know, Carrian gets it right every time—one more reason I admire that girl! 😉

Is Gnocchi Pasta or Potato?

This is a fantastic question with a nuanced answer! While many consider gnocchi a type of pasta, its primary ingredient is often potato, along with flour, semolina, and sometimes egg and other ingredients to vary its flavor and texture. So, in essence, it’s a delightful culinary hybrid—a dumpling-like pasta made with potato. This unique composition gives gnocchi its characteristic tender, pillowy texture that sets it apart from traditional flour-and-water pastas.

What’s the Best Sauce for Gnocchi?

Gnocchi is an incredibly versatile canvas, capable of pairing with an astonishing array of sauces. While our brown butter and sage combination is a personal favorite for its simplicity and depth of flavor, gnocchi also shines with a classic marinara, a vibrant pesto, a creamy Alfredo, or even a rich pepper sauce or a delicate pink sauce. Its neutral, tender profile allows it to soak up and complement almost any flavor profile. The Sam’s Choice Italia line, conveniently available at Walmart, also offers some fantastic ready-to-use sauce options, such as their delightful basil pesto and a robust roasted garlic tomato sauce, making weeknight meals even easier.

How Do You Cook Packaged Gnocchi?

Cooking packaged gnocchi is wonderfully straightforward, much like preparing conventional pasta. You’ll need a large saucepan or pot, filled about halfway with water. Bring the water to a rapid boil over medium-high heat. Once boiling furiously, generously salt the water – this seasons the gnocchi from within. Then, add the gnocchi to the boiling water, giving it a gentle stir to prevent any pieces from sticking together. The quick cooking time is one of its best features!

How Long to Cook Gnocchi

Gnocchi cooks remarkably quickly, usually requiring only about 1 minute in boiling water. The moment it floats to the surface, it’s essentially cooked through. At this point, you have two delicious options: you can immediately remove the gnocchi from the water and toss it directly into your favorite sauce, or, as we prefer for this brown butter sage recipe, you can transfer it to a pan with a little oil or butter and cook it until it becomes beautifully crispy and golden. The crispy exterior adds an irresistible texture that truly elevates the dish.

Why Do Gnocchi Float?

The floating action of gnocchi is a clear indicator that it’s cooked! When gnocchi is placed in boiling water, the starch within it begins to gelatinize, causing the gnocchi to expand slightly and become less dense. Simultaneously, the boiling water creates steam bubbles that get trapped within the gnocchi. As these bubbles accumulate, they make the gnocchi buoyant, causing it to rise to the surface of the water. It’s a really simple and reliable visual cue to know when your gnocchi is perfectly done, allowing you to quickly move on to making your 10-minute brown butter sage gnocchi!

Can Gnocchi be Made Ahead of Time?

Absolutely! Gnocchi can be prepared in advance using a couple of convenient methods:

Freezing Uncooked Gnocchi: Freezing uncooked gnocchi is incredibly simple and an excellent way to prepare for future meals. After forming your gnocchi, arrange them in a single layer on a baking sheet dusted with a generous amount of flour to prevent them from sticking together. Place the baking sheet in the freezer for about 2 hours, or until the gnocchi are firm. Once frozen, transfer the gnocchi to zip-top freezer bags and store them for up to 1 month. When you’re ready to cook, there’s no need to thaw!

Can Gnocchi Dough be Refrigerated? Yes, you can also refrigerate both uncooked dough and cooked gnocchi. Uncooked gnocchi dough should be tightly wrapped in plastic wrap to prevent it from drying out and can be refrigerated for up to 5 days.

Cooked gnocchi can be quickly cooled down in an ice bath to stop the cooking process, then lightly tossed with a small amount of olive oil to prevent sticking. Store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. To reheat, simply toss it in a pan with your chosen sauce, gently warming it through.

Can Gnocchi Be Cooked From Frozen?

Yes, and this is one of the fantastic advantages of gnocchi! It’s one of the best pastas to freeze because it can be cooked directly from its frozen state without needing to be thawed first. Simply take your frozen gnocchi and add it straight into boiling, salted water. Cook until it floats to the surface, drain, and then serve with your favorite sauce. This makes it a perfect quick-meal solution!

Gnocchi, What Went Wrong?

Readers frequently ask why their gnocchi fell apart or turned out mushy. These are common issues, and typically, there are two main culprits:

  • Overcooking: The most common reason gnocchi falls apart or becomes mushy is overcooking. Gnocchi cooks very quickly, often in just a minute or two. If left in boiling water for too long, they absorb too much water, lose their structure, and disintegrate.
  • Improper Dough Consistency: For homemade gnocchi, if the dough wasn’t formed correctly—perhaps it was too wet, or too much flour was incorporated—it might result in a grainy or mushy texture once cooked. Achieving the perfect dough consistency can be quite tricky, which is precisely why finding a great store-bought product like Sam’s Choice Italia Gnocchi offers such an easy and reliable solution for consistent results.

Are Gnocchi Gluten Free?

Traditionally, gnocchi is not gluten-free because it is primarily made from flour and potato, which are key components of the pasta. However, with the growing demand for gluten-free options, many grocery stores now offer gluten-free gnocchi alternatives, typically made with gluten-free flours or alternative starches. If you have gluten sensitivities, be sure to check the ingredient label when purchasing.

Where is Gnocchi in Walmart?

Since gnocchi is considered a pasta and a dry good, you can typically find the Sam’s Choice Italia gnocchi in the pasta aisle at Walmart. Gnocchi does not require refrigeration until it has been cooked, making it an excellent pantry staple. Stock up on it so you’re always prepared to whip up this delicious 10-minute brown butter sage gnocchi whenever the craving strikes!

Expert Tips for Perfect Brown Butter Sage Gnocchi

To ensure your Sage Brown Butter Gnocchi turns out perfectly every time, keep these expert tips in mind:

  • Use Unsalted Butter: This is a key recommendation. Using unsalted butter allows you complete control over the saltiness of your dish, letting the natural flavors of the gnocchi and sage shine without being overwhelmed.
  • Opt for a Light-Colored Skillet: When browning butter, a light-colored pan is your best friend. It makes it much easier to visually track the butter’s color as it transforms, helping you achieve that perfect amber hue and prevent it from going from nutty brown to bitter black.
  • Don’t Burn the Butter: This cannot be stressed enough! Burnt butter has an incredibly bitter, unpleasant taste and will ruin your entire dish. If you accidentally burn the butter, there’s no saving it. Dispose of it immediately, thoroughly clean your skillet, and start fresh. It’s better to be safe than sorry!
  • Use Fresh Sage: While dried herbs have their place, fresh sage is absolutely essential for this recipe. The vibrant, aromatic oils in fresh sage are what give this dish its signature, irresistible fragrance and flavor.
  • Don’t Overcrowd the Pan: When crisping the gnocchi, ensure you don’t overcrowd the pan. Cooking in batches if necessary will allow each piece to get direct contact with the pan, ensuring even browning and crispiness. Overcrowding steams the gnocchi instead of frying it.
  • Freshly Grate Parmesan: For the best flavor and melt-factor, always opt for freshly grated Parmesan cheese over pre-grated varieties. The flavor is significantly superior, and it melts much more smoothly.
  • Taste and Adjust Seasoning: Always taste your dish before serving and adjust the salt and pepper as needed. The brown butter and Parmesan add a lot of savory depth, so a final touch of seasoning can make all the difference.

  • 3 Leaves Fresh Sage
  • Salt and Pepper, to taste
