Every Easter, our family delights in making these sweet empty tomb rolls (also known as resurrection rolls). The marshmallow melts magically inside during baking, creating a delicious caramel sauce within the roll, leaving a “hollow” center. This recipe is one of our all-time favorite Easter traditions and a truly special way to celebrate.

Ingredients

  • 12 Rhodes Rolls (or homemade dough, or crescent roll dough for a quicker option)
  • 12 Marshmallows (standard size)
  • ½ Cup Granulated Sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon Ground Cinnamon
  • ⅓ Cup Butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish, a 9-inch round baking dish, or a standard muffin tin to prevent sticking.
  2. In a small bowl, combine the granulated sugar and ground cinnamon thoroughly. This mixture will coat your marshmallows and dough.
  3. Take one Rhodes roll (or a piece of your preferred dough) and flatten it into a small circle. Dip a marshmallow into the melted butter, ensuring it’s fully coated. Then, roll the buttered marshmallow in the cinnamon sugar mixture until well covered. Place this prepared marshmallow onto the center of your flattened dough circle.
  4. Carefully pinch the edges of the dough together around the marshmallow, sealing it completely. It’s crucial that there are no openings for the marshmallow to escape during baking. Once sealed, gently roll the dough ball again in the remaining melted butter, and then once more in the cinnamon sugar mixture for an extra flavorful crust.
  5. Place the prepared dough ball into your greased baking dish or muffin tin. Leave a little space between each roll if using a dish, as they will expand.
  6. Repeat this process for all remaining dough pieces and marshmallows until your baking dish is full, typically 12 rolls for a standard recipe.
  7. Allow the rolls to rest in the baking dish for about 15 minutes before baking. This short proofing time helps them become extra fluffy. Then, bake for 15 minutes, or until the rolls are beautifully golden brown and puffed up.
  8. Serve these delightful Empty Tomb Rolls immediately while they are warm and the caramel sauce from the melted marshmallow is still gooey and delicious.

Recipe Notes

For best results, these rolls are best enjoyed fresh out of the oven. If you have any leftovers, store them covered at room temperature for 2-3 days. Reheating briefly in the microwave can help restore some of their warmth and gooeyness.
