Discovering Utah’s Local Gems: A Culinary Journey Through Our Neighborhood
Have you ever experienced the vibrant flavors and community spirit of the Taste of Utah? If not, you’re in for a delightful surprise! Recently, I had the pleasure of attending this fantastic event, and it truly exceeded all expectations. It was an incredible opportunity to connect with local entrepreneurs, savor unique products, and witness the passion that goes into creating Utah’s finest. The atmosphere was electric, filled with happy faces and the buzz of discovery.
There’s something uniquely rewarding about buying local. Beyond the immediate satisfaction of acquiring exceptional products, it’s an act of community support. We’re not just purchasing an item; we’re investing in the dreams of our friends and neighbors, bolstering our local economy, and fostering a stronger, more connected community. Furthermore, local products often boast a freshness and authenticity that mass-produced alternatives simply can’t match. From farm-fresh produce to artisan baked goods, the difference in quality and flavor is often palpable.
Join me as we take a virtual stroll through our “neighborhood” – the thriving landscape of Utah’s local businesses – and meet some of the extraordinary individuals behind these fantastic products. Prepare to be inspired by their stories, dedication, and the sheer deliciousness they bring to our tables.

GF² (Good Food Gluten Free): Crafting Delicious Gluten-Free Delights
Our first delightful neighbor is Angie from GF² (Good Food Gluten Free), a business that quickly became one of my absolute favorites during the tasting. As someone who’s particular about gluten-free options, I often find myself disappointed by products that sacrifice flavor and texture for the sake of being “GF.” However, Angie’s creations are a revelation. Her commitment to quality ensures that every bite is not only tender and moist but also bursting with authentic flavor – a true rarity in the gluten-free world.
Angie generously shared her inspiring journey with me:
“I was diagnosed with celiac disease about five and a half years ago. Like many, I endured years of misdiagnosis. Having grown up constantly baking and cooking with my Mom, the initial frustration of attempting gluten-free bread brought me to tears. But I quickly picked myself up and dedicated myself to mastering the new skills required for baking with alternative grains. It wasn’t until we moved to Salt Lake City four years ago that I realized I had access to a large enough market and the necessary resources for supplies and ingredients to finally launch my business. The Cottage Food Program became available in late 2008, if I recall correctly, and I officially started my business in June 2009. At that time, competition was minimal, allowing me to secure spots in two dedicated gluten-free specialty stores and one health food store. Despite facing nearly 20 new competitors today, I am steadily expanding into more locations, continually serving a growing and wonderfully loyal client base.”
“Many of the pre-made gluten-free foods available simply didn’t meet my standards. While companies, both large and small, are improving their quality, my focus was always on creating homemade, comfort-style foods that evoke the warmth and approval of your grandmother’s kitchen. A core objective for me is to produce food that the entire family, group, or party can genuinely enjoy, without anyone feeling obliged to offer a polite ‘it’s okay’ comment. I want the food to be absolutely amazing, to travel well (as my family loves camping and road trips), to freeze and thaw perfectly, and to boast a good shelf life. All my product recipes are adaptations of beloved old family favorites, carefully reformulated to earn a place on my gluten-free ‘must-have’ list!”
“Although my home is often a delightful chaos with three kids and a home-based business, it’s been truly amazing to witness my family’s incredible support, especially emotionally. They consistently surprise me with their own burgeoning passions for what I do. I imagine many women business owners—or perhaps just all moms!—experience similar hardships and rewards on this journey.”
Angie’s story is a testament to resilience, passion, and the power of creating delicious food for everyone to enjoy. It was a true pleasure to meet her and taste the difference her dedication makes!

Gregory’s Wheat Shop: The Wholesome Goodness of Sprouted Bread
Our next neighbor is a cherished name many Utah locals might already recognize: Gregory’s Wheat Shop, home of the famed Jack Spratt’s Sprouted Wheat Bread. This isn’t just any bread; it’s a testament to timeless quality and delicious nutrition. While some may be familiar with their offerings, for those who aren’t, prepare to be introduced to truly exceptional baked goods.
Gregory’s Wheat Shop boasts a rich history, having served the Bountiful, Utah community for a significant period. Their commitment to natural, wholesome ingredients is evident in every loaf. One of their most commendable practices is their absolute refusal to use any preservatives in their breads. This dedication to purity ensures that you’re enjoying bread that is as real and fresh as possible. Their range is impressive, from robust sprouted whole wheat to delectable cinnamon burst varieties, each offering a unique and satisfying experience.
In an era dominated by highly processed foods, Gregory’s Wheat Shop stands as a beacon of traditional baking, prioritizing health without sacrificing taste. Imagine finding bread where you can read and understand every single ingredient – a true “Hallelujah!” moment for any health-conscious consumer. The bread itself is incredibly tender, bursting with flavor, and of such high quality that even my little ones devoured it with enthusiasm. What truly sets it apart, however, is that authentic, homemade taste. It’s the kind of bread that makes you feel like you just pulled it fresh from your own oven. It’s real, it’s amazing, and it’s simply done right. And the people behind it? Just as amazing as their products.
We are actively advocating for Gregory’s Wheat Shop to expand its presence into local supermarkets. If you have a moment, a quick call to your favorite grocery store requesting their bread could significantly help them reach a wider audience. Let’s help bring this exceptional, preservative-free bread to more tables across Utah!

Nature Baked: Revolutionizing the Food Industry, One Granola at a Time
Continuing our journey, we encounter another incredible neighbor: Mike from Nature Baked. If you, like me, are tired of disappointing, subpar granola, prepare to have your world changed. Nature Baked granola is not just delicious; it’s an experience. I’ve wasted money on countless boxes of bland, overly sweet granola, always wishing I’d just made my own. But with Nature Baked, I’ve found a new standard of excellence. You absolutely must try their Caramel Apple and Strawberry-Craisin varieties – they are truly phenomenal. Imagine topping your fall peach or apple crisp with this granola; it will elevate your dessert to an entirely new level. Trust me, it’s that good.
Mike, a father, husband, CEO of Nature Baked Inc., and a chronic entrepreneur (with a Magic: The Gathering collection rumored to rival any in the state!), shared his profound insights into his business journey:
“My reasons for pursuing this business have evolved drastically throughout its life, which I attribute to a significant part of our success. Initially, like all my other ventures, it began as a means to generate income. Nature Baked was actually conceived only to ‘help out a little’ by selling at farmer’s markets. However, as I delved deeper into the food industry, I became increasingly appalled by accepted practices and the widespread consumer ignorance (including my own initially) that allowed them to persist. What truly shocked me was discovering that the worst offenders were often companies portraying themselves as ‘healthy choice’ brands. At least when you buy a bag of Oreos, you know you’re choosing something indulgent and not necessarily good for you. But when you purchase a case of granola bars, advertised as ‘all-natural’ or even ‘organic,’ assuming they are healthy, only to find they contain more sugar and unhealthy fats than Oreos, then there’s a serious problem.”
“I also observed a significant lack of options for small food companies striving to succeed in the large retail environment. There’s a colossal gap between small, home-produced goods and large-scale production companies, with very little middle ground. I’m leveraging my connections with Gardner Development (the developers behind Gateway downtown and the Adobe building in Lehi) to address this. We are planning a facility that will not only meet our own production needs but also provide extra space that we can transform into a dozen or so co-op kitchens. These kitchens will be available for smaller companies to rent by the week, day, or even hour. This initiative will allow us to serve as a crucial springboard for other emerging companies struggling to bridge the gap between home-based production and a full-scale manufacturing facility.”
“As you can see, what began as a way to supplement our budget has blossomed into a full-blown opportunity to enact meaningful change on multiple levels. It can be challenging to explain to some that, yes, I am fully dedicated to our granola, but Nature Baked is, in fact, much, much more than just granola.”
Mike’s vision extends far beyond just delicious granola; it’s a mission to transform the food industry from the ground up. His dedication to transparency, health, and supporting fellow entrepreneurs makes Nature Baked a truly inspiring local business.

Condies Foods: Fresh Salsa That Transports You
Let’s pause our culinary journey for a moment to discuss something truly special: salsa. As self-proclaimed salsa connoisseurs, my family and I have a strict rule: it must be fresh, absolutely no jarred varieties allowed. So, when I say that the salsa from Condies Foods has captured my heart, you know it’s a significant endorsement. Their mango salsa, in particular, is a sweet and savory symphony of flavors that is utterly divine. It’s the kind of salsa that makes you exclaim, “Oh my sweet deliciousness!”
Condies Foods isn’t just about incredible flavor; they also boast an impressive legacy and commitment to quality:
- They are the Intermountain Region’s premier Fresh Produce Processor and Fresh Tomato Repacker, highlighting their expertise in handling the freshest ingredients.
- This company has been proudly owned and operated by the same family for over 73 years. This kind of multi-generational dedication speaks volumes about their commitment and stability – a truly admirable feat.
- Condies Foods is deeply committed to working towards a sustainable future, demonstrating an awareness and responsibility that goes beyond just their delicious products.
- Their products are, without exaggeration, AMAZINGLY DELICIOUS.
- Every bite tastes like you’re soaking up the sun in Cabo San Lucas, California, or some other wonderfully warm, tropical locale, far removed from the cooler climes of Utah. It’s a mini-vacation for your taste buds!
It was an absolute pleasure to discover Condies Foods. Their commitment to freshness, family legacy, and sustainable practices, combined with truly unforgettable flavors, makes them an invaluable part of Utah’s local food scene. You absolutely must give their fresh salsa a try!

Seal Sama: Master Sushi Chef Peggi Whiting’s Exquisite Teriyaki Sauce
Prepare to be amazed by our next new friend, Master Sushi Chef Peggi Whiting. Peggi is not just amazing; she’s a true pioneer. Having trained in Japan, she stands among the first women to achieve the prestigious title of Master Sushi Chef. What an incredible accomplishment for this phenomenal lady!
And it gets even better. She brought with her a revelation: her Teriyaki Sauce. YUM! Back home in Washington, I had a beloved place called Samurai Sam’s, which I adored for years until it sadly closed. I’ve searched tirelessly for a replacement, a teriyaki sauce that truly captures that perfect balance of sweet and savory without being an overpowering sodium bomb. And guess what? I’ve finally found it! HOORAY! Seal Sama Teriyaki Sauce is precisely what I’ve been seeking. It’s wonderfully thick, rich with full-bodied flavor, and miraculously, doesn’t taste like pure sodium. You simply must try it; I guarantee you’ll never look back at other brands.
What makes Peggi’s sauce even more impressive is the variety she offers: Chef’s Blend, Wheat Free, Less Sodium (though her standard blend is already remarkably low in sodium), and Sugar-Free. This thoughtful range ensures there’s a perfect option for every palate and dietary need, all without compromising on that incredible, authentic taste. It’s truly so, so good!
Be sure to check out her incredible products at Seal Sama!

Sweet’s Candy Company: A Century of Sweetness and Family Fun
The kids instantly went crazy for the candy from our next neighbor, and I must admit, I was equally impressed. This was, hands down, some of the best taffy I’ve ever had! The vibrant flavors and delightful chewiness were simply irresistible.

Speaking of delightful, how charming is this friendly neighbor? I particularly loved how shy and hesitant they were about being in the photo – truly darling! This is the legendary Sweet’s Candy Company, a true cornerstone of our community that has been delighting taste buds for over 100 years! Wow, what an incredible legacy of sweetness.
Sweet’s Candy is renowned for its iconic products, most famously their irresistible salt water taffy, spicy cinnamon bears, and classic orange sticks. These treats have graced generations of Utahns’ lives, becoming beloved staples.
But here’s the extra sweet detail about this veritable “Grandpa company” of the neighborhood: they offer free tours of their candy factory! You and your little ones can embark on a fun, behind-the-scenes adventure to see how all the magic happens. And the best part? You get free samples! WOOHOO! What a fantastic opportunity to create lasting memories and enjoy some delicious treats. As a parent, I absolutely adore opportunities to take the kids somewhere fun and educational. This is definitely on my list – done and done!
A huge thank you to this wonderful neighbor for a century of sweetness and for providing such a delightful experience for families!
Butcher’s Bunches: Handcrafted Preserves That Will Change Your Breakfast

Oh, oh, oh… get ready for some truly yummy jam. My goodness, the raspberry preserve from Butcher’s Bunches was absolutely amazing. Truly. It tasted like I was biting into a fresh, ripe raspberry straight from the bush, with no artificial flavors or excessive sweetness masking its natural brilliance. It was an experience, not just a condiment.
As we reach the end of our street, though our neighborhood certainly holds many more incredible people, I think you’d be overwhelmed if I kept “walking.” But before we conclude, you simply must know about Butcher’s Bunches. You will absolutely fall in love with their handcrafted preserves. Seriously, I could use a good lesson from them. No kidding! Please, dear neighbor, teach me your ways of preserving such intense, natural fruit flavor!
I urge you to indulge your curiosity and treat yourselves to some of these magnificent preserves. Once you taste them, you’ll understand exactly what I mean. You’ll find yourself actively seeking ways to incorporate these preserves into at least breakfast and lunch every single day. EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. I cannot lie; they were genuinely the best preserves I’ve ever had. Butcher’s Bunches, you are amazing. YUM!
Deer Creek Foods: The Game-Changing Low-Carb Tortillas
I have one last, crucial neighbor I simply must tell you about, even though I don’t have a picture. You’ll just have to stick with me on this one. I consider myself a “tortilla snob.” Have I ever said this out loud before? Well, no, but it’s the absolute truth. I have a profound disdain for crappy, thick, bland tortillas. They are the worst, truly awful.
These tortillas, however, from Deer Creek Foods – um, they are delicioso! Seriously. Oh my goodness. I genuinely wish my pictures had turned out better, but my camera battery was low, and I was in a hurry to try them. Meet Deer Creek Foods. Their low-carb tortillas are, without exaggeration, better than most “full-carb” tortillas I’ve encountered. I am not joking in the slightest. Please, go look for them at your local store. Give them a friendly wave (metaphorically, of course), and absolutely try their food. You won’t regret it. YUM!
