Hutsuls 3x9" Leather Paddle Strop for Knife Sharpening
Product description
Complete kit and purpose
The kit arrives as a single paddle strop measuring about 3 inches by 9 inches, ready for use on knives, chisels, plane blades, axes and other edged tools. It ships with an application guide that walks you through the stropping steps and a small jar of green stropping compound to refresh and speed up the honing process.
Materials and build
Both faces of the paddle are covered in organic buffalo leather — one side is smoothed for delicate polishing, while the other is left with a slightly more aggressive texture for initial burr removal. The leather is mounted on a solid ashwood paddle with a rounded ergonomic handle for a secure, comfortable grip during repeated passes.
How it’s used
Lay the paddle flat or hold it by the handle and drag the blade away from the edge across the leather at a shallow angle. Use the rougher face to eliminate micro-burrs, then flip to the smooth face with a light coating of the green compound to mirror-polish the edge. Regular stropping maintains cutting performance between sharpening sessions.
Pros
- Durable buffalo leather for long-term honing
- Double-sided surfaces for coarse and fine finishing
- Comfortable ashwood handle for steady grip
Cons
- No protective cover included
- Wood finish is plain and may need treatment for aesthetics
- Compound will need replenishing over time
VerdictThis 3" x 9" leather paddle strop is a well-crafted honing tool that pairs thick buffalo leather with a sturdy ashwood paddle and a comfortable handle. The two-faced leather gives options for coarse and fine finishing, and the included green compound accelerates edge refinement. It’s easy enough for novices and precise enough for experienced users who want a reliable stropping solution for kitchen

Truly Premium Feel and Thoughtful Extras
After a couple of weeks and several knives, this strop feels like a premium tool. The buffalo leather offers controlled bite; the fine side helps reveal any missed burrs. Ashwood is solid and it arrived with a handwritten thank-you note, which was a nice touch.

New to Stropping, Very Impressed with Results
I switched from quick rod-style sharpeners and noticed less surface wear on blades. After reading up on stropping, this paddle transformed three knives I’d avoided using on other devices — much finer, cleaner edges with minimal surface scarring.
