Some culinary pairings are simply destined for greatness – think the comforting crunch of chips and salsa, the classic delight of cookies and milk, the hearty sweetness of pancakes and syrup, or the savory perfection of bacon and eggs. Yet, few duos ignite the senses quite like peanut butter and chocolate. This heavenly combination is truly a match made in gastronomic bliss, and these incredible Peanut Butter Bars are the ultimate testament to that timeless partnership!

The Irresistible Allure of Peanut Butter and Chocolate
For many, the love affair with peanut butter runs deep, far beyond a simple jar of creamy or crunchy indulgence. It’s a foundational flavor that evokes childhood memories, comforting snacks, and utterly satisfying treats. Peanut butter, in its pure form, offers a unique blend of salty and sweet, creamy and robust. This inherent versatility makes it a beloved staple in kitchens worldwide, transforming ordinary ingredients into extraordinary delights.
When united with the rich, decadent notes of chocolate, peanut butter transforms into something truly magical. The contrasting textures and complementary flavors create a symphony on the palate – the smooth, nutty warmth of peanut butter perfectly balanced by the sweet, sometimes bittersweet, complexity of chocolate. This synergy makes for an unparalleled dessert experience, elevating simple ingredients into an irresistible treat. The world, quite simply, becomes a happier and sweeter place whenever this dynamic duo is involved. If you’re curious about our long-standing devotion to this humble nut butter, you can delve into our story here – but for now, let’s focus on the pure joy these bars bring!
A Treasured Recipe Born from Friendship and Shared Joy
This particular recipe for peanut butter bars came into my life courtesy of my dear friend, Kara. She brought them to a baby shower I attended, and it was love at first bite. From the moment I tasted their soft, chewy texture and the perfect balance of sweet and salty, combined with that luscious chocolate frosting, I knew instantly that this recipe had to be part of my collection. It’s the kind of dessert that leaves an immediate, lasting impression.
Since then, these bars have become a cherished staple in my repertoire, eagerly anticipated and rapidly devoured every time I share them at gatherings. They consistently disappear faster than almost any other dessert on the table, a true testament to their unparalleled deliciousness and universal appeal. There’s something incredibly satisfying about watching people’s faces light up after their first bite, quickly followed by requests for the recipe.
I confess, whenever I find myself at a party or social event with a dessert spread, my eyes are invariably drawn to the dessert bars, especially if they promise the delightful presence of peanut butter or chocolate in any form. It’s an almost magnetic pull; I’m like a moth to a flame, or as I like to say, “a Carrian to a dessert bar!” They are simply too tempting to resist, offering a convenient, crowd-pleasing format that’s easy to eat and share. These particular Peanut Butter Bars are the epitome of that irresistible charm, showcasing the ultimate harmony of flavors and textures in a convenient, delicious package.

What Makes These Peanut Butter Bars Uniquely Delicious?
These aren’t just any peanut butter bars; they possess distinct characteristics that elevate them above the rest, making them a truly memorable dessert. Two key ingredients truly set this recipe apart, contributing significantly to their exceptional texture and profound flavor profile.
The Surprising Secret: Margarine for Unmatched Texture
The first unique ingredient, and perhaps the most surprising to some, is margarine. I know, I know! Many seasoned bakers and baking purists might recoil at the mention of margarine, immediately reaching for butter or shortening as a seemingly more traditional or “superior” substitute. However, for this specific recipe, I implore you to trust me and my friend Kara. Margarine is not just an option; it’s the *only* way to achieve the specific, melt-in-your-mouth texture and rich, tender crumb that defines these bars. Its unique composition helps create a softer, more delicate base that truly distinguishes these peanut butter delights from others made with different fats. Margarine contributes to a unique chewiness and a subtle richness that is simply irreplaceable in this particular formulation. Don’t be tempted to swap it out – embrace the margarine for an authentic and unbelievably delicious result!
The Wholesome Heart: Rolled Oats for Depth and Chewiness
Secondly, the thoughtful addition of oatmeal provides these bars with an incomparable texture and a deep, satisfying flavor that you won’t find in typical peanut butter bars. The oats lend a delightful chewiness and a subtle earthiness that perfectly complements the smooth, rich peanut butter base and the creamy chocolate frosting. They add a hearty dimension, preventing the bars from being overly dense or one-dimensional in texture.
Beyond their undeniable textural contribution, oats also bring a hint of wholesome goodness to the mix. They’re widely recognized for their health benefits, known for aiding in weight management, supporting cardiovascular health by reducing cholesterol, helping to stabilize blood sugar levels, and being packed with essential vitamins, minerals, soluble fiber, and powerful antioxidants. So, with all that beneficial oatmeal in the mix, these bars are practically a health food… right? Well, maybe not entirely, and certainly not a substitute for a balanced meal, but a baker can always dream! It’s a delightful way to enjoy a treat with a little extra substance.

Crafting the Irresistible Chocolate Frosting: A Creamy Dream
The magic of margarine makes another appearance in the frosting, and once again, your trust will be generously rewarded. It’s the secret behind a frosting that is unbelievably creamy, rich, and so utterly delicious you’ll want to spread it on everything – and frankly, you might just find yourself doing so! This isn’t just any topping; it’s a luxurious, luscious blanket of chocolatey goodness that perfectly crowns the peanut butter base, adding another layer of indulgence and textural contrast. The margarine helps create a silky-smooth consistency that melts ever so slightly in your mouth, enhancing the overall experience. Be warned: this frosting is so good, you will absolutely be licking the spatula clean with this one!
A small but important detail in the frosting recipe is the instruction for “1/4 cup of scant cocoa.” For those new to baking terminology or seeking precision, “scant” means that you don’t pack the ingredient into the measuring cup, nor do you fill it completely to the absolute brim. Instead, you measure just shy of the full 1/4 cup. This subtle nuance is crucial for achieving the perfect balance of chocolate flavor without overwhelming the sweetness or making the frosting too bitter. It ensures the frosting remains a harmonious complement to the peanut butter bars, contributing to its delightful texture and exquisite taste without being too dense or intensely chocolatey.

Margarine: A Brief History and Its Unique Culinary Role
Given its prominent and somewhat unexpected role in this recipe, it’s worth understanding a bit more about margarine. Margarine serves as a butter substitute, typically created from various vegetable oils or, in its earlier forms, from animal fats. It functions as a versatile spread and a staple ingredient for baking and cooking, offering a different set of properties compared to butter.
Its origins trace back to 1869 in France, when Emperor Napoleon III initiated a challenge to Hippolyte Mège-Mouriès: invent a butter alternative that was both affordable and durable. The goal was to provide a reliable fat source for his armed forces and the working classes, especially during times of scarcity. Mège-Mouriès succeeded, initially using beef tallow to create what we now recognize as margarine.
Over the decades, margarine formulations have evolved significantly, moving predominantly towards plant-based oils. While butter remains a preferred fat in many households for its distinctive flavor and richness, certain cherished recipes, like these Peanut Butter Bars or our famous caramel brownies made from scratch, truly shine when margarine is used. Its distinct emulsification properties and melting point can often yield a unique tenderness, lightness, and specific flavor profile that butter simply can’t replicate in those particular applications. It creates a softer, chewier texture that is foundational to the success of these bars.

The Essential Kitchen Companion: Our Favorite Spatula for Perfect Servings
Every dedicated baker has a few indispensable tools that streamline the cooking process and make the magic happen. For me, one of those unsung heroes is the small spatula you might spot in some of our photos. It’s more than just a tool; it’s a kitchen essential that brings a little extra joy and precision to the preparation and serving process. Its perfectly designed size and shape make it ideal for effortlessly cutting dessert bars, scooping out lasagna, or serving portions of casseroles into precisely sized servings. It ensures every piece looks as good as it tastes, which is crucial when presenting a beautiful dessert like these peanut butter bars.
I found this gem at Orson Gygi, a truly phenomenal kitchen store located here in Utah. Tips for Perfect Peanut Butter Bars Every Time
To ensure your Peanut Butter Bars turn out perfectly, consider these helpful tips:
- Room Temperature Ingredients: Always ensure your margarine and egg are at room temperature before you begin mixing. This allows them to cream together more smoothly, resulting in a more uniform and tender bar.
- Don’t Overbake: Peanut Butter Bars can quickly dry out if left in the oven for too long. Keep a close eye on them; they should have lightly golden edges and a set center, but still feel slightly soft to the touch. Remember, they will continue to set as they cool.
- Cool Completely: Resist the urge to frost warm bars! This is a crucial step. Let them cool completely for at least 30 minutes, or even longer if needed, on a wire rack. This ensures the chocolate frosting sets beautifully without melting or sliding off, creating a clean, professional finish.
- Scant Cocoa Measurement: As mentioned, for the frosting, measure the cocoa “scant,” meaning slightly less than a full 1/4 cup. This helps achieve the ideal balance of chocolate flavor without making the frosting too bitter or overpowering.
- Slice with Ease: For perfectly neat slices, allow the frosted bars to set for a while (even a brief stint in the fridge helps). Use a warm, damp knife or our favorite spatula (mentioned above!) for cutting. Wipe the knife clean between each cut for the cleanest edges.
Storing Your Peanut Butter and Chocolate Delights
These delectable bars are incredibly versatile when it comes to storage, allowing you to enjoy them for days or even months. For immediate indulgence, they are best stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3-4 days. This keeps them wonderfully soft and fresh.
If you want to extend their delicious life, they can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to a week. Just be sure to bring them back to room temperature for a few minutes before serving to enjoy their optimal texture and flavor. For longer storage, these bars freeze exceptionally well. Simply wrap individual bars or the entire pan (once completely cooled and frosted) tightly in plastic wrap, then an additional layer of aluminum foil, and freeze for up to 3 months. When a craving strikes, simply thaw them at room temperature for a quick and easy treat!

These Peanut Butter Bars are the ultimate combination of chocolate and peanut butter!
Ingredients
For the Bars:
- 3/4 Cup White Sugar
- 3/4 Cup Brown Sugar
- 3/4 Cups Margarine *see note
- 1 Large Egg
- 1/2 teaspoon Vanilla
- 3/4 Cup Peanut Butter
- 3/4 teaspoon Baking Soda
- 1/2 teaspoon Salt
- 1 1/2 Cups Flour

- 1/4 Cup Cocoa, Scant
- 3/4 Cups Margarine, room temperature
- 1/2 teaspoon Vanilla
- 1/4 Cup Milk
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and prepare a 9×13 inch pan by spraying it with nonstick cooking spray.
- In a large bowl, cream together the white sugar, brown sugar, margarine, and egg until well blended and light.
- Add the vanilla and peanut butter, mixing until thoroughly combined.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the baking soda, salt, flour, and oats. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Evenly spread the mixture into the prepared 9×13 inch pan and bake for 20-22 minutes, or until edges are lightly golden and the center is set.
- Remove from oven and let the bars cool completely for at least 30 minutes on a wire rack before spreading with the chocolate frosting. (Frosting recipe instructions below).
For the Frosting:
- In a medium bowl, combine the powdered sugar, scant cocoa powder, and room temperature margarine.
- Add the vanilla extract and milk. Mix with an electric mixer until smooth and creamy. If the frosting is too thick, add more milk 1 teaspoon at a time until the desired consistency is reached.
Recipe Notes
This recipe yields a half batch; for a larger quantity suitable for a jelly roll pan, consider doubling all the ingredients. And yes, really, it’s margarine! While you might be tempted to use butter or shortening, I concur with my friend Kara: margarine simply works best here for the unique texture and flavor these bars are known for.
Bars can be frozen for up to 3 months when stored in an airtight container. Wrap them tightly in plastic wrap, then foil, for best results.
