Mastering the Instant Pot: Your Guide to Homemade Hamburger Helper
You’re about to discover how refreshingly straightforward and incredibly fast it is to create this beloved dish in your Instant Pot. The beauty of this recipe lies in its efficiency, transforming simple ingredients into a satisfying meal with minimal effort.
The journey begins with setting your Instant Pot to “Saute” mode. This initial step is crucial for building a rich flavor base. Add a touch of oil to the pot, then introduce your ground beef. As the beef browns, use a spoon or spatula to break it up into small, even pieces. This ensures even cooking and prevents large clumps. Once the beef is thoroughly browned, it’s important to drain off any excess grease. We typically opt for 85% lean ground beef; it strikes the perfect balance, offering abundant flavor without drying out, a common issue with leaner cuts.
Next, enhance the aromatic profile by adding finely diced yellow onions and minced garlic to the browned ground beef. Continue to sauté these ingredients for a few minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions soften and turn translucent. This step mellows their raw flavor and allows their sweetness to emerge, complementing the savory beef beautifully.

Now for the seasonings! Stir in the kosher salt, freshly cracked black pepper, dried thyme, and dried oregano. These herbs provide a classic, comforting depth to the dish. Follow with Worcestershire sauce, which adds a subtle tang and umami boost, enhancing the overall savory profile. Once these are combined, stir in the tomato paste. This concentrated ingredient is key for a rich, tomatoey foundation. Pour in a quarter cup of beef broth and, with a sturdy spoon, meticulously scrape the bottom of the pot. This vital step, known as deglazing, lifts any browned bits stuck to the bottom, which not only adds immense flavor but also prevents your Instant Pot from triggering the dreaded “burn” message during pressure cooking. After deglazing, add the remaining beef broth and the dry macaroni. Ensure the macaroni is mostly submerged in the liquid for proper cooking.
With all ingredients in place, press “Cancel” on your Instant Pot to turn off the “Saute” mode. Securely lock the lid onto the Instant Pot and ensure the steam release valve is set to the “Sealing” position. Select the “Manual” or “Pressure Cook” mode and set the cooking time to 5 minutes. This short cooking time is perfect for achieving al dente pasta in a pressure cooker.
Once the 5 minutes of pressure cooking are complete, carefully perform a quick release of the pressure by turning the steam release valve to the “Venting” position. Stand back and allow the steam to fully escape. Once the float valve drops, you can safely remove the lid. Give everything a good stir, then incorporate half of the shredded cheddar cheese, allowing it to melt into the hot pasta and beef mixture, creating a creamy, irresistible sauce. Sprinkle the remaining cheese evenly over the top, then place the lid back on the Instant Pot (without locking it) for just 2 minutes. This brief period of residual heat will gently melt the remaining cheese to perfection. Finally, remove the lid, give it one last gentle stir, and serve immediately. Congratulations, you’ve just prepared a delicious, hearty dinner in less than 20 minutes!

Frequently Asked Questions About Instant Pot Cooking & Substitutions
The Instant Pot has revolutionized meal preparation for countless households, making complex dishes simple and quick. Below, we address some common questions to help you get the most out of your multi-cooker and this delicious recipe.
What Exactly Does an Instant Pot Do?
An Instant Pot is a truly versatile kitchen appliance, a marvel of modern engineering that consolidates the functions of seven distinct kitchen tools into one compact unit. It serves as an electric pressure cooker, a slow cooker, a rice cooker, a steamer, a sauté/browning pan, a yogurt maker, and a food warmer. Its primary benefit is its ability to cook food significantly faster than traditional methods, especially when utilizing its pressure cooking function. This makes it an invaluable asset for busy individuals and families seeking efficient meal solutions. We rely on ours constantly for everything from quick weeknight meals to preparing staple ingredients like grains and broth.
Can You Air Fry in an Instant Pot?
Yes, but not with the standard Instant Pot lid. To transform your Instant Pot into an air fryer, you’ll need a specialized add-on. This is typically an air fryer lid designed to fit compatible Instant Pot models, which applies circulating hot air to crisp and brown food. This innovation is relatively new, and while we haven’t personally tested it yet, it’s an exciting development for those looking to expand their Instant Pot’s capabilities. Additionally, Instant Pot has introduced new appliances like the Duo Crisp, which natively combines pressure cooking and air frying functions. These newer models offer a comprehensive solution for diverse cooking needs.
What Happens if an Instant Pot is Overfilled?
Simply put: avoid overfilling your Instant Pot at all costs! Overfilling is a common mistake that can lead to several problems, some of which can be quite messy or even dangerous. The most critical issue is that it can clog the venting valve, which is essential for proper pressure release and safe operation. A clogged valve can prevent the Instant Pot from reaching or maintaining pressure correctly, leading to undercooked food or, worse, potential safety hazards. Furthermore, overfilling almost invariably results in a significant mess, as liquids or food particles can sputter out during steam release. If you find yourself in a situation where you suspect overfilling, perform a natural pressure release. This allows the internal foam or liquids to settle somewhat, reducing the likelihood of a massive spill. Trust us, it’s not a sight you want to witness!
Can Ground Turkey Be Substituted for Ground Beef in This Recipe?
Absolutely! Ground turkey is an excellent and popular substitute for ground beef in many recipes, including this Instant Pot Hamburger Helper. We make this substitution frequently in our kitchen. When using ground turkey, you might notice a slightly leaner texture and a milder flavor, so feel free to adjust seasonings to your preference or add a touch more oil during the initial sautéing if desired. This flexibility makes the recipe adaptable to different dietary needs and flavor preferences.
What Can Be Substituted for Kosher Salt?
Kosher salt is favored for its larger crystal size and lack of additives, which gives it a clean taste and makes it easy to measure by pinch. If you don’t have kosher salt on hand, the best substitute is coarse sea salt, which has a similar texture and flavor profile. If neither of those is available, you can use regular table salt, but be mindful of the quantity. Table salt has much finer crystals and is denser, meaning you’ll need less of it. A general rule of thumb is to use 1/2 to 3/4 teaspoon of table salt for every 1 teaspoon of kosher salt to achieve a similar level of salinity.
Is Pasta Considered Fattening?
When consumed in moderation and as part of a well-rounded diet, pasta can certainly be part of a healthy eating plan. Pasta is primarily a source of carbohydrates, which are essential for energy. The key lies in portion control and the type of pasta chosen. Opting for whole grain pasta provides more fiber, which can aid digestion and promote a feeling of fullness. As with all foods, the overall balance of your diet is what truly matters for healthy eating. Pairing pasta dishes with plenty of vegetables and lean proteins, and controlling serving sizes, allows you to enjoy it without guilt.

Can I Make Hamburger Helper in the Slow Cooker?
While technically possible, making this dish in a slow cooker would largely negate the convenience benefits of using an Instant Pot or even the stovetop. For a slow cooker version, you would still need to brown the ground beef and sauté the onions and garlic separately before adding them to the slow cooker. Furthermore, pasta typically doesn’t fare well when cooked for extended periods in a slow cooker, often becoming mushy. You would likely need to cook the pasta separately and add it at the very end. At that point, you wouldn’t be saving significant time or making the process any easier; in fact, it would likely involve more steps and dishes.
Can Hamburger Helper Be Made on the Stove Top?
Absolutely, this recipe can be easily adapted for stovetop cooking! If you prefer to use a traditional pot or don’t have an Instant Pot, simply follow the initial steps for browning the beef and sautéing the vegetables in a large skillet or Dutch oven. Proceed through step 7 of the Instant Pot instructions (adding all ingredients except the cheese to the pot). Instead of pressure cooking, bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low, cover the pan, and let it cook for 15-20 minutes, or until the macaroni is cooked al dente (tender with a slight bite). Stir occasionally to prevent sticking. Once the pasta is ready, remove the lid, stir in half of the cheese until melted, then sprinkle the remaining cheese over the top. Place the lid back on the pan for a couple of minutes to allow the cheese to melt into a gooey, delicious layer. Serve hot and enjoy your homemade stovetop Hamburger Helper!
Don’t wait to discover the incredible taste and convenience of homemade Instant Pot Hamburger Helper!
