Chapter Fifteen: Enduring Faith in the Abyss

From Physical Wounds to Spiritual Awakening: Embracing Resilience and Love

Last summer, a seemingly minor kitchen accident turned into a moment of shocking realization. I vividly remember the sharp pain and the sight of my finger after I had accidentally chopped off the top. My immediate reaction was a quiet, almost disbelieving, “I cut myself.” My husband, Cade, ever the pragmatic one, initially responded, “You need a bandaid?” It wasn’t until I held up my finger, displaying the extent of the injury, that the urgency of the situation fully registered. His eyes widened, and he sprinted off to fetch our medical kit, understanding then that this was far more than a simple cut.

Today, looking at my finger, you would never guess the severity of that incident. There’s no noticeable difference; it’s simply a finger, fully regenerated and whole. This incredible capacity for the human body to heal and restore itself has always fascinated me. Throughout my life, I’ve been profoundly drawn to medicine, not just as a field of study, but as a source of awe, wonder, and immense gratitude. It’s a testament to the miraculous processes within us and the advancements of modern science.

The Unseen Miracles: Beyond Physical Healing

My gratitude for modern medicine extends far beyond a healed finger. It has quite literally been a lifeline for me, sustaining me through significant health challenges, and for each of my three children, who, against difficult odds, thrived through the hardest of circumstances. These experiences have instilled in me a deep appreciation for the fragility of life and the powerful interventions that can preserve it.

This profound sense of gratitude and awe for healing extends, perhaps unexpectedly, to my journey online. Navigating the digital world has presented its own unique set of challenges and opportunities for growth. I am deeply humbled and appreciative of the platform it provides, but more significantly, I’ve found healing from the negativity and hate that can often pervade online spaces. Much like my body’s ability to regenerate a finger, my entire being – my heart, my perspective, and even my core personality – has undergone a profound transformation. If a finger can heal completely, then surely, a soul can too! Of course, I joke; I’m no lizard, but the regenerative power of the spirit is truly remarkable.

Confronting Negativity: The Wisdom of Responding with Love

This transformation, however, was not immediate. In the initial aftermath of encountering online hate and criticism, my instincts urged me to fight back, to explain, to defend myself. I wanted to cry out, “Have you any idea why I look like this?! I am battling for my survival, and you choose to direct hate towards me?!” It felt incredibly unfair and deeply personal, especially when comments targeted my appearance and implied my illness might harm my unborn child.

It was during this intense period that I turned to Cade. For those who haven’t yet caught on, my adoration for this man runs deep; he is truly my steadfast rock. He didn’t offer immediate solutions but instead wrapped his arm around me, allowing me to weep openly into his shoulder. He understood the pain. He knew these harsh words had struck precisely where I was most vulnerable. I already struggled to look at myself, seeing only the prominent bones and the constant anxiety that our baby wasn’t growing properly or would suffer due to my illness. Being thin was a relentless reminder that I felt broken, unattractive, and that something was fundamentally wrong with me, potentially jeopardizing our child.

Amidst my tears and despair, Cade offered a simple yet revolutionary piece of advice:

“Respond with love.”

My initial, unspoken reaction was a defiant, “Oh, bite me! YOU respond with love! These people are being absolutely unreal!” But even as the thought formed, I couldn’t bring myself to voice it. An immediate conviction washed over me: not only was he profoundly right, but this particular moment, this challenge, was intrinsically part of my story. It felt necessary. I remembered a pivotal moment in the hospital, a “window and light” experience, where I recognized I had a significant “work to do.” Sometimes, it seems, one must be dragged through the metaphorical mud and rain to cultivate something truly extraordinary and beautiful within oneself.

And so, I chose to act upon his wisdom. With careful deliberation, I began to respond to every single email and comment with love and compassion. Four years later, as I reflect on that period, I am truly choked up by what transpired next. The experience was nothing short of miraculous, a testament to the transformative power of choosing empathy over anger.

The Ripple Effect of Compassion: Witnessing Transformation

Just as I strive to drop everything and be fully present with a sick child, offering comfort and unwavering support, I wondered if we could extend that same empathy to those whose pain isn’t immediately visible—the person right next to us, or even the anonymous voice behind a screen.

My commitment to responding to every comment and email with love created an astonishing ripple effect. Suddenly, our loyal readers began to mirror that love, engaging in supportive and kind exchanges. Slowly, almost imperceptibly at first, the tide began to turn. The relentless flow of negative comments not only ceased, but the ‘haters’ themselves started to delete their original, hurtful remarks. And the emails—oh, my goodness, the emails that followed were profoundly moving. Initially, I believed the pain would have been worthwhile even if I had touched just one person. But the reality was far more expansive; the impact reached countless individuals.

Stories of Hope: The Power of Shared Vulnerability

One particularly poignant letter came from a husband, whose words painted a vivid picture of his despair: “I’m a grown man sitting in the dark sobbing,” he wrote. “My wife has been so incredibly sick, and I’ve been utterly terrified. Nothing we’ve tried seems to help, and suddenly, I feel consumed by guilt for even wanting a baby, for putting her through this agonizing ordeal. How can I possibly watch my wife suffer any longer? I’ve felt absolutely lost and profoundly alone.” He continued, “Then someone shared your post on Facebook. My fear, for the first time in months, is gone. I realize now that all she needs is my love. For the first time, I feel like I’m not alone, and I truly believe I can do this. I honestly didn’t think we would make it another day.” His raw honesty and newfound hope were a powerful testament to the impact of vulnerability and compassion.

Another incredible message arrived from a woman who declared, “I have harbored hatred for the world for most of my life. I saw no good, no good people, and absolutely no reason to try to be kind or even to continue living anymore. But for some inexplicable reason, I read your post. I sat there, waiting to watch the fight unfold, waiting for you to respond, anticipating the drama.” She then concluded, “And then, I witnessed grace for the very first time in my life. I have been changed forever because you showed me that perhaps, just perhaps, there is a small amount of good left in this world. So now, I’ll be it. I promise I’ll be the one to respond with love, I’ll be the one to lift the broken, because there must be more of you out there.” These stories, incredibly powerful and deeply touching, represent only a fraction of the heartwarming responses we received.

The power we hold to lift and inspire others is undeniably real. This singular decision, to respond with love, not only profoundly helped countless others but also solidified within me an unwavering commitment to never entertain a negative thought about another person, even if they would never know my internal musings. It was in this process that I truly learned to love myself, precisely as I am. I have no room in my heart for hurt or negativity. I can genuinely love you, whoever you are, because I have personally witnessed and experienced the profound healing power that love radiates. This pivotal moment fundamentally reshaped our connection with our readers. Have you noticed the change?

A Test of Trust: Life’s Unforeseen Challenges and Modern Medical Miracles

Life, however, often presents its own unpredictable twists, challenging our resolve and our capacity for trust. Around the same time, I was relentlessly pushing to find a new house, get an offer accepted, and move—all before our new baby arrived. The thought of relocating with a newborn, combined with school starting, felt overwhelming and impossible. I was driving myself to exhaustion, forgetting the crucial lesson of remembering to simply trust that things would unfold as they should.

It’s a common experience in hospitals: IVs are almost always started in the crook of the arm. But for someone like me, who has endured countless medical procedures, those veins quickly become unusable. My veins were, to put it mildly, shot. I had been admitted in an extreme hurry; my blood pressure was dangerously low, almost nonexistent. The doctor, in a grave tone, looked at me and said, “Carrian, on paper, you’re already gone. We are taking you straight over to the hospital. I know you hate it, but I’m saving your life.” I trusted his words implicitly, but the fear and the sheer exhaustion brought tears to my eyes.

Once admitted, the nurse faced the inevitable challenge of finding a viable vein. She had to move further up my arm, searching for a good spot. But she missed. In a terrifying instant, blood shot out like a geyser, splattering across the ceiling and raining down, warm, all over me. She had hit an artery. I could see the panic flash across her face as my eyes slowly began to close, the world fading to black.

When I regained consciousness, she was gone, replaced by a new nurse who was carefully finishing taping the IV to my arm. The tape was incredibly itchy, spreading a rash, but they were securing it extra tight while meticulously cleaning all the blood. It was, in that moment, truly one of the worst experiences of my life. Yet, amidst the pain and the fear, a profound sense of gratitude washed over me. I offered a silent prayer of thanks that I was alive in an era where such medical interventions were possible, where my life could be saved. What were the chances? Had I been born just 100 years prior, I would almost certainly have died. The thought of trying to manage a move with such a critical medical crisis was, in hindsight, unfathomable.

Spiritually Stretching: Drawing on Divine Power

These intense life experiences, both physical and emotional, have consistently drawn me back to a fundamental truth about faith and resilience. As one powerful passage articulates:

“Many of us have cried out from the depths of our hearts a variation of this woman’s words: “If I could spiritually stretch enough to draw the Savior’s power into my life, I would know how to handle my heart-wrenching situation. I would know what to do. And I would have the power to do it.”

“When you reach up for the Lord’s power in your life with the same intensity that a drowning person has when grasping and gasping for air, power from Jesus Christ will be yours. When the Savior knows you truly want to reach up to Him—when He can feel that the greatest desire of your heart is to draw His power into your life—you will be led by the Holy Ghost to know exactly what you should do.”

“When you spiritually stretch beyond anything you have ever done before, then His power will flow into you.”

This concept of “spiritual stretching” resonates deeply with my journey. It implies an effort, a reaching, a profound desire to connect with a higher power, especially when life feels unbearable. So, I commit to stretching. I will stretch until it truly hurts, until every fiber of my being feels the strain of holding on. Because I have witnessed that truth, both in moments of physical healing and in the deepest emotional transformations. It has fundamentally changed who I am, solidifying my belief in the incredible power of resilience, love, and unwavering faith. It teaches us to embrace every challenge as an opportunity for profound growth and to trust in the journey, no matter how arduous.
