Beyond the Belt: What Fat Pants Really Tell Us

The truth about fat pants

For many of you who follow my journey on Instagram, the hashtag #fatpants has become a familiar and often amusing fixture, especially when I share those indulgent, comforting recipes that truly hit the spot. What began as a lighthearted joke, a playful nod to embracing delicious food, gradually evolved into something far more profound and significant for me. The truth behind #fatpants isn’t just about enjoying an extra cookie or a rich casserole; it’s intricately woven into a deeply personal and purposeful endeavor: I was actively working to gain 15-20 pounds, and there was a very important, life-changing reason behind it.

The story began over a year ago when my husband and I sat down with our trusted physician, Dr. Haskett. Our conversation centered on the possibility of expanding our family and welcoming another baby into our lives. We’ve navigated a complex path to parenthood before, and you can delve into our past concerns and challenges in a previous post. Dr. Haskett’s guidance was clear and strategic: to prepare my body for the immense journey of pregnancy, the best course of action would be to gain a healthy 15-20 pounds and consistently take prenatal vitamins. This regimen was designed to build up essential reserves, ensuring my body was in the optimal condition to not only conceive but also sustain a healthy pregnancy.

The directive seemed straightforward enough: eat more, gain weight. Yet, what sounds simple on paper proved to be a far greater challenge than I could have anticipated. For months, I dedicated myself to packing on the pounds, often finding it surprisingly difficult. My body tends to lose a significant amount of weight during pregnancy, and this buffer was crucial. We needed to ensure I had ample reserves to draw upon, especially given the considerable physical demands pregnancy places on my system. Simultaneously, I needed to be as strong and healthy as possible, a delicate balance when the goal is to gain weight. It required a conscious shift in my lifestyle and eating habits, often feeling counterintuitive to my usual focus on balanced nutrition. But every extra pound, every additional calorie, was a simple and profound sacrifice, made with the unwavering hope of a new life.

Answering the Question: So, Are You Pregnant?

And now, after months of preparation, dedication, and hopeful anticipation, it’s time to share the incredible truth: I am currently nine weeks pregnant! This journey, while filled with immense joy and gratitude, has also been incredibly challenging from the very beginning. Each day, however, brings an amazing blessing, a constant reminder of the miracle unfolding within me. We are truly overwhelmed with happiness at the prospect of expanding our family, a dream we’ve held close to our hearts. The reality, though, is far from easy. I’m experiencing a severe form of morning sickness known as Hyperemesis Gravidarum, or HG.

Hyperemesis Gravidarum is not merely “extreme nausea and vomiting” – it’s an unrelenting, debilitating condition that has taken a significant toll on my physical and mental well-being. Unlike typical morning sickness, HG causes persistent, severe nausea and continuous vomiting that prevents me from keeping down food and liquids. It has led to profound dehydration and nutritional deficiencies, necessitating frequent medical intervention. I’ve been hooked up to IVs at the hospital an average of three times a week, a stark routine aimed at battling the relentless vomiting and replenishing my fluids. The struggle to keep anything down, even a simple ice chip, is constant and exhausting. The sensation of an empty stomach, coupled with the profound dehydration, is frustrating and utterly draining, yet we remain steadfast in our belief that we can endure this. We have faced similar battles twice before, drawing strength from those experiences, and we are committed to staying positive through every single challenging moment.

Navigating the Blog’s Future During This Time

Understandably, many of you might be wondering what this new chapter means for the blog. Rest assured, we anticipated the possibility of a demanding pregnancy, especially given our past experiences, and took proactive steps to prepare. Before this joyous news arrived, we diligently worked to create a robust content schedule. I have a significant number of posts already written and queued up, ready to be shared with you all. Additionally, we’ve been fortunate enough to collaborate with some incredibly talented individuals who will be contributing insightful guest posts, ensuring a continuous flow of fresh and engaging content. My heartfelt hope is that you will continue to stick with us through this period of transition and personal growth.

While I am committed to sharing updates on our journey as much as I possibly can, I must be transparent about the significant hurdles Hyperemesis Gravidarum presents. The severe nausea and debilitating fatigue often leave me with very little energy or mental clarity to work. Tasks that were once simple now feel monumental, and finding the ability to sit at a computer and write can be an enormous challenge. Despite these difficulties, I promise to try my absolute best to stay in touch, whether through brief updates on social media or occasional blog posts when my health permits. Your understanding and continued support mean the world to me during this incredibly trying yet ultimately rewarding time. We are deeply grateful for this wonderful community.
