Our Journey in Parenthood: Celebrating Our Children
As dedicated readers, you might have noticed our choice to maintain privacy regarding our children’s names. While we may not be Hollywood celebrities like Julia Roberts or George Clooney, we’ve always felt a strong inclination to keep their identities shielded, a decision we continue to uphold. This boundary allows us to share our family life authentically while protecting their personal space as they grow. However, despite this decision, we truly consider you an extension of our family, our beloved Oh Sweet Basil community. Therefore, we couldn’t be more excited to share with you what we consider our most magnificent creations yet: our children!
Meet Our Wonderful Eldest Daughter (Age 9)
Our eldest, now nine years old, continues to teach us profound lessons about love, far beyond anything we ever anticipated. Naturally, part of this learning comes from experiencing the unparalleled, unconditional love a parent feels for their child. Yet, she possesses a truly unique gift for a fourth-grader: an innate ability to perceive the needs and feelings in the hearts of those around her, and an incredible drive to act on those observations. She is remarkably quick to identify someone in need of a kind gesture, whether it’s suggesting we deliver cookies to a friend, helping a woman at the grocery store with her shopping, or simply recognizing that her sister needs some dedicated story time.
I recall a particularly challenging period just before our youngest was born. The debilitating effects of Hyperemesis Gravidarum were intensifying, our website’s email inbox was overflowing, and we had just moved into a new home – a truly stressful combination. One evening, after cleaning up dinner, I came upstairs to find our bedroom door ‘heart-attacked’ with an array of sweet, handwritten notes from her, expressing how special we are and how much she loves us. It was a perfect, spontaneous act of service and affection that perfectly encapsulates her thoughtful nature.
She embodies a collection of truly admirable qualities:
- **Easygoing:** Adapts gracefully to new situations and changes.

- **Smart:** Demonstrates keen intelligence and a thirst for knowledge.

- **Organized:** Displays a natural inclination for order and planning.
Our Vibrant Middle Daughter (Age 5)
Following our eldest, we introduce our spirited five-year-old. Her pregnancy was, without a doubt, our most challenging experience. There were moments when I genuinely doubted my ability to endure, and the intensity of it all took a toll on our entire family. She was also a notoriously difficult baby during her first year, marked by significant feeding issues that led to a very restricted diet for me for a long time. It wasn’t until she turned one that we finally felt a sense of relief and could begin to breathe a little easier, and I could finally start enjoying normal foods again.
Despite those early struggles, this little one is now radiating happiness almost ninety-eight percent of the time. She is incredibly affectionate, constantly seeking cuddles and showering us with love. Her intelligence shines through in kindergarten, where she is excelling remarkably. We are absolutely thrilled by her profound love for reading, a passion she embraces wholeheartedly. She is utterly smitten with her baby brother and adores her big sister; there’s truly nothing better for her than being surrounded by her family at home. Unlike her elder sister, she possesses a wonderful capacity for independent play and self-entertainment – perhaps a characteristic often found in second children.
Her delightful personality is defined by these traits:
- **Super Talkative:** Her conversations are boundless; we often have to set a timer at dinner just to ensure she pauses long enough to eat, as she can chatter non-stop for thirty minutes!
- **Energetic:** She approaches life with boundless enthusiasm and vigor.
- **Sweet:** Her gentle and loving nature warms everyone around her.
- **Artistic:** Expresses creativity through drawing, crafting, and imaginative play.
- **Smart:** Quick-witted and eager to learn, absorbing new information readily.
- **Imaginative:** Her world is rich with fantastical stories and creative scenarios.
- **Snuggly:** Finds immense comfort and joy in physical affection.
- **Still Naps:** A rare and cherished trait for her age; she genuinely loves her afternoon rest, though we know it won’t last forever!
- **A Baker:** Shows a keen interest in helping in the kitchen, especially with sweets.
- **Funny:** Possesses a charming sense of humor that brings smiles to our faces.
Our Cherished Youngest Son (10 Weeks Old)
And now, Mr. Handsome! What can we possibly say about our first little man? He is yet another profound miracle, bringing an entirely new dynamic to our family. We are so grateful that he is a fantastic eater, especially considering the significant challenges we faced with our daughters learning to nurse. In fact, he would happily nurse all day long if he could! Interestingly, he has transitioned from being the world’s best sleeper and happiest baby to becoming quite the challenging napper during the day. While his daytime struggles are real, he generally wakes only once around 2:30 AM to feed before settling right back to sleep, so we truly can’t complain too much about our little night owl.
We are still pinching ourselves that we finally get to say “he”! Hooray for a boy!

- **Robust:** Tipping the scales at 8.2 pounds.
- **Tall:** Measuring a delightful 20.5 inches long.

- **Strong:** Possesses remarkable strength in his neck and legs for his age.
- **Gassy:** (Ha! But seriously, a common infant trait we’re navigating!)
