Walking through those aisles, I was overwhelmed by a sense that everyone could see my vulnerability, my lack. It had been a year since we’d had fresh produce, and the simple act of buying whatever one truly needed, let alone desired, felt like an unimaginable luxury.
I carefully selected milk, bread, a small block of cheese, and peanut butter, which happened to be on sale. At the checkout, the total exceeded my meager funds. With a wave of acute embarrassment, I awkwardly explained, “Oh, I actually don’t need that peanut butter.” I paid for the rest and quickly fled the store, feeling utterly humiliated.

While I often jokingly refer to my peanut butter obsession, this is the profound, real reason I cherish it so deeply. It stands as a powerful symbol, a constant reminder of that pivotal moment.

The following day, brimming with collected donations, we personally delivered the groceries to the doorsteps of families needing a little extra support during the holiday season. The sheer enthusiasm to get out and make a tangible difference was not only contagious but also instilled a powerful sense of hope in the rising generation. Witnessing their dedication, it was clear they are poised to accomplish truly fantastic things in the world.
For some families, we weren’t entirely sure of their specific need for groceries, but we acted on a quiet inner prompting – that distinct feeling when a name surfaces in your mind, and you instinctively know you need to reach out. We may never know the exact thoughts of those families when they returned home to find piles of grocery bags on their doorsteps, but that knowledge isn’t necessary. This is one of those life moments – the kind that imprints itself on your heart forever, the kind that profoundly changes your family for the better. These acts of spontaneous generosity create lasting memories and teach invaluable lessons.
We asked our oldest daughter how she wanted to serve during the Light The World campaign, and without hesitation, she expressed a desire to pay for groceries for strangers at the store. We encouraged her to prayerfully invite friends to join her, and she chose a diverse group of boys and girls, thoughtfully mixing up their usual friendships. I deeply admired her inclusive approach.
Armed with cash, we headed to the store, distributing a portion to each pair of children. They would then discreetly position themselves in line behind a shopper. When the person reached the cashier, the children would step forward and offer the cash. Sometimes, it was enough to significantly help; other times, it covered the entire grocery bill. The children’s faces glowed with pure joy and excitement. They experienced immense personal growth as customers, often moved to tears by their unexpected kindness, shared their stories. One woman tearfully explained that she had been reviewing her budget, wondering how she would afford groceries that month, and saw the children’s act as a profound blessing. Phew! It’s a rush, but an incredibly fulfilling one! Every time I do it, I have to fight back tears. Okay, I usually cry 9 out of 10 times, but often, they are crying too, creating a shared moment of raw, beautiful emotion.
