The Genesis of a Delicious Friendship and a Beloved Recipe

The creation of this incredible dessert pizza holds a special place in my heart, born from a wonderful collaboration with my dear friend, Deborah, from Taste and Tell. Our paths had crossed before, but it was during EVO’12 that our connection deepened, blossoming into a truly cherished friendship. Isn’t it remarkable how often shared passions bring people together, revealing unexpected commonalities?

Deborah visited one day, eager to discuss the intricate world of blogging and food photography. Her talent for capturing the essence of food through her lens is truly exceptional, and I was thrilled to pick her brain for tips and insights. We spent hours immersed in conversation, sharing ideas, and exchanging creative wisdom. It was an inspiring and enriching experience that left a lasting impression. A few weeks later, when the craving for something truly delicious for dessert struck, my mind immediately revisited our delightful time together and the idea of this chocolate pizza emerged, a direct delicious descendant of that inspiring day.

This dessert isn’t merely a recipe; it’s a testament to the joy of shared experiences and the serendipitous nature of culinary inspiration. The simple act of grilling Naan and topping it with Nutella and strawberries felt like a natural extension of our creative energy. It’s a reminder that some of the best ideas, and indeed some of the best friendships, often spark from unexpected connections.

A Sweet Transformation: From Health Nut to Dessert Lover

As I sit here writing about this delightful Nutella Strawberry Pizza, my thoughts naturally drift to my wonderful husband, Cade. He has a profound affection for Nutella, and it warms my heart to see him enjoy this treat. It’s quite amusing, actually, considering his past. When Cade and I first met, he was an ardent health enthusiast, committed to a completely sugar-free lifestyle. As the Student Fitness Director at BYU-Idaho, he embodied fitness and healthy living, with little to no room for sugary indulgences.

I often love to remind him of a pivotal moment from those early days: he actually turned down my famous Caramel Brownies! Yes, those “Knock You Naked Brownies” or “best brownies ever” that have become a sensation across the web (though my recipe, I must humbly add, possesses its own unique and irresistible touch). For his birthday, I lovingly baked him a generous pan of these renowned brownies, presenting them alongside his other gifts. We had a lovely celebration, but to my dismay, the next day I noticed not a single brownie had been touched. My reaction was probably something akin to, “Are you serious?! Not even just one, this once?!”

Well, let’s just say my persistence, or perhaps the sheer allure of those brownies, eventually prevailed. He finally tried them, and from that moment on, they became his sole birthday request, his absolute favorite dessert, no matter what new concoction I might whip up. BOOM! I knew I could change him. This sweet victory, paired with countless other shared joys, cemented our love story, and we soon fell in love and got married. It just goes to show the powerful, transformative magic of truly good food, and perhaps a little bit of persuasive charm!

Beyond the delightful personal stories, there are compelling reasons why this Nutella Strawberry Pizza deserves a coveted spot in your recipe collection. It’s more than just a dessert; it’s an experience. Here’s why it stands out:

  • Effortlessly Delicious: Utilizing store-bought Naan bread dramatically cuts down on preparation time, making this an ideal dessert for impromptu gatherings or weeknight indulgence. The ingredient list is minimal, and the steps are straightforward.
  • The Magic of the Grill: Grilling the Naan adds a subtle smoky flavor and a perfect crisp-chewy texture that sets this dessert pizza apart from oven-baked versions. It’s a game-changer for flavor and texture.
  • Melty Nutella Perfection: The warmth from the freshly grilled Naan ensures the Nutella becomes beautifully soft and gooey, creating an incredibly satisfying, rich base that melts in your mouth with every bite.
  • Fresh Fruit Burst: The vibrant, fresh strawberries provide a delightful contrast to the rich Nutella. Their natural sweetness and slight tartness cut through the richness, creating a perfectly balanced flavor profile. Plus, they add a beautiful pop of color!
  • Versatile & Customizable: While Nutella and strawberries are a classic, this recipe is a fantastic canvas for creativity. Explore other fruits, nuts, or drizzles to make it uniquely yours.

Dive Deeper into the Star Ingredients

Let’s take a moment to appreciate the wonderful components that make this dessert pizza so special.

Strawberries: Tiny Red Powerhouses of Goodness

Often considered the jewel of the berry family, strawberries are not just delicious but also incredibly nutritious. They are a fantastic source of essential vitamins and antioxidants. One cup of fresh strawberries contains an impressive 89 mg of Vitamin C, surpassing the daily requirement for an adult. This powerful antioxidant supports immune function, promotes skin health, and helps fight free radicals in the body. Beyond Vitamin C, strawberries also provide a good amount of manganese, potassium, and folate, along with dietary fiber which aids digestion and promotes satiety. Their natural sweetness makes them a healthy and refreshing addition to any meal.

To ensure your strawberries stay fresh and flavorful for as long as possible, proper storage is key:

  • The best way to store strawberries for maximum longevity is to keep them cold and dry.
  • Do not wash them before storing. Moisture encourages mold growth.
  • Carefully remove them from their store container and place them in a single layer on a paper towel-lined tray or container. You can also line the original container with a paper towel.
  • Place the strawberries back in the container and refrigerate.
  • Wash thoroughly just before eating to maintain their freshness.

Is Nutella Chocolate? The Sweet Truth

Nutella is a widely beloved, creamy chocolate and hazelnut spread. While it has a distinct chocolatey flavor, it’s not pure chocolate. Its unique taste comes from a careful blend of ingredients. The primary components of Nutella are sugar, modified palm oil, hazelnuts, cocoa powder, and skim milk. This combination gives it its signature rich, sweet, and nutty profile, making it incredibly versatile for spreading, baking, and, of course, transforming into a dessert pizza masterpiece!

The combination of these simple yet powerful ingredients creates a dessert that is both familiar and exciting, offering a gourmet twist on a classic comfort food. The grilling process adds depth and character, turning ordinary Naan into an extraordinary base for your sweet creation.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 Cup Low Fat Milk
  • 1/2 Cup Water
  • 1/4 Cup Sugar
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons Instant Yeast
  • 1 Egg
  • 3 Tablespoons Plain Greek Yogurt
  • 2 teaspoons Sea Salt
  • 2 Cup All-Purpose Flour
  • 2 Cups Cake Flour
  • 1 Tablespoon Water, **see note
  • Nutella
  • Strawberries

Instructions

  1. Warm the milk and water in the microwave.
  2. Do not use hot water. If it gets too hot, let it cool slightly.
  3. Add the sugar and yeast and let proof (allow it to become foamy and puffy). This should take approximately 10 minutes.
  4. In a large bowl, combine the egg, yogurt, and salt. Whisk until well combined.
  5. Once the yeast has proofed, add it to the large bowl with the other ingredients and stir until smooth.
  6. Add the flour and mix until the dough begins to come together.
  7. Begin to knead the dough until you achieve a smooth ball. You will almost always need one additional tablespoon of water. However, if the dough is smooth without it, you can occasionally skip this step. If you are struggling to get a smooth dough, go ahead and add the extra water.
  8. Place the dough in a lightly oiled (with olive oil) bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 30-60 minutes.
  9. Heat the grill to medium-high.
  10. Using a lightly oiled paper towel, wipe down the grill grates to prevent the bread from sticking.
  11. Place the dough on a lightly floured surface and cut it in half, then into thirds.
  12. Roll each dough piece out (it doesn’t need to be perfectly even) to about 1/4-1/2 inch thick.
  13. Place the dough on the grill and cook for a few minutes per side, or until beautiful grill marks begin to appear. Be careful not to overcook, as this will make the Naan dry and cardboard-like. Flip to the other side, cook for a minute or two, and then spread a generous heaping of Nutella over the top.
  14. Remove the grilled Naan with melted Nutella from the grill and top immediately with fresh berries.
  15. Serve immediately to enjoy the melty Nutella and warm Naan.

Tips for Grilling Perfection

Achieving the perfect grilled dessert pizza is simple with a few key techniques:

  • High Heat is Key: Ensure your grill is properly preheated to medium-high heat. This allows for quick cooking and those beautiful char marks without drying out the Naan.
  • Oil the Grates: Don’t skip wiping the grates with a lightly oiled paper towel. This prevents sticking and makes flipping easier.
  • Don’t Overcook the Naan: Grilled Naan cooks quickly. Keep an eye on it to prevent it from becoming dry and brittle. You want it just lightly browned with distinct grill marks.
  • Timing the Nutella: Apply the Nutella while the Naan is still warm on the grill (after flipping to the second side for a minute). The residual heat will soften it perfectly, making it easy to spread and wonderfully melty.
  • Fresh Strawberries are a Must: The contrast of cool, fresh strawberries against the warm, gooey Nutella and Naan is what truly makes this dessert sing. Add them immediately after removing the pizza from the grill.

Creative Variations for Your Dessert Pizza

While the classic Nutella and strawberry combination is sublime, don’t hesitate to experiment with other toppings to suit your taste or what’s in season:

  • Berry Blast: Instead of just strawberries, try a mix of raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries for a colorful and tangy twist.
  • Banana Bonanza: Sliced bananas pair beautifully with Nutella. Add them fresh or grill them lightly for a caramelized flavor.
  • Tropical Treat: Thinly sliced mango or pineapple could add a refreshing, exotic touch.
  • Nutty Crunch: Sprinkle chopped hazelnuts, almonds, or walnuts over the Nutella for added texture and flavor.
  • Creamy Indulgence: A dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream right before serving takes this dessert to another level.
  • Extra Chocolatey: Drizzle with a little extra melted chocolate or sprinkle with chocolate shavings for the ultimate cocoa experience.
  • Different Base: No Naan? No problem! This recipe works well with other flatbreads, pita bread, or even a pre-baked pizza crust.
