Today, we are incredibly honored and excited to welcome Sarah back to our blog. This particular topic resonates deeply with us at Oh Sweet Basil, as the desire to expand our own family remains a cherished dream, albeit one we are currently navigating. You might recall Sarah from her memorable guest post, where she shared the beloved Ranch Chicken Pillows recipe. Our decision to collaborate on this personal and profound journey stems from a crucial understanding: a significant number of adoptions materialize through the powerful network of word-of-mouth. Therefore, we earnestly ask you to consider pinning or sharing the final image in this post across your social media channels. Your single share could be the pivotal connection that helps bring a family together. The reach of a shared story is immeasurable, and you truly never know whose eyes it might land upon. Without further ado, I’ll turn it over to Sarah to share her family’s beautiful and inspiring story.
We are absolutely thrilled to be back on Oh Sweet Basil, connecting with this wonderful community once again! For those who might be new here or need a gentle reminder, our initial introduction to this space was when Carrian graciously featured one of our absolute favorite recipes: the comforting and delicious Ranch Chicken Pillows. Today, however, we’re stepping beyond the kitchen to share something far more personal and profoundly meaningful to us. We genuinely hope you’ll take a moment to click on our picture later in the post to delve deeper into our journey through our own blog. But, as this marks our first substantial post sharing our story here, we want to offer a brief, heartfelt introduction to who we are. Dave and I have been happily married for over six remarkable years. Our relationship embarked on what some might describe as a whirlwind journey; from our very first date to the day we exchanged vows, a mere five months elapsed. Yet, the rapid pace wasn’t born of haste, but rather an undeniable certainty. We both recognized a connection so profound, so unequivocally right and real, that we knew it was a foundation we simply couldn’t, and wouldn’t, deny. It was a feeling of absolute belonging, a clarity that has guided us ever since.

Embracing Parenthood: A Moment of Pure Perfection
After nearly a year and a half of patiently, yet anxiously, hoping to conceive without success, we decided it was time to take those initial, somewhat awkward, but ultimately necessary steps toward seeking medical assistance. The journey through infertility can be daunting, filled with emotional highs and lows, and a persistent question mark hanging over one of life’s most fundamental desires. With the invaluable support of medical professionals and an abundance of heartfelt prayers, we were incredibly blessed to become pregnant and, eventually, welcome our beautiful, vibrant daughter, Aliyah, into the world. Every mother, whether through birth or adoption, knows that words can scarcely capture the overwhelming surge of emotion that accompanies holding your child for the very first time. For us, it was a moment imbued with profound peace, an all-encompassing happiness, and a deeply overdue sense of relief. In that precious instant, as Aliyah lay in our arms, everything in the world felt utterly and absolutely perfect. It was the culmination of hope, struggle, and unwavering love, marking the beginning of our most cherished chapter.

As is often the case in life, time marches on, and with it, circumstances seem to cycle, bringing new joys and, at times, new trials. With a desire to expand our family further, we once again sought medical guidance, only to learn a heartbreaking truth: the same medical assistance that had helped us conceive Aliyah would unfortunately not be effective a second time around. This revelation ushered in a challenging period, as over the course of two years, we experienced two pregnancies that both tragically ended in miscarriage. It is incredibly difficult to convey the profound depth of emotions we endured after the second miscarriage. The sense of loss was overwhelming, compounded by intense frustration, confusion, defeat, and a pervasive pain that touched every aspect of our lives. We held a strong conviction that we were meant to have more children, and with each pregnancy, we felt an undeniable hope that this time, it would go full term. Yet, despite our deepest desires and fervent prayers, it simply wasn’t meant to be, leaving us grappling with shattered dreams and an uncertain future.

The emotional recovery from repeated loss took considerable time and immense effort. It was a period of introspection, healing, and slowly gathering the strength to envision a path forward. When we finally felt emotionally prepared to contemplate expanding our family again, we were presented with a stark medical reality: if we wished to pursue pregnancy, In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) would be our only viable option. This pivotal moment led to deep discussions and careful consideration within our family. We firmly concluded that our family was meant to grow, and our choices distilled down to two distinct paths: embarking on the intensive journey of IVF, or embracing the transformative process of adoption. To make an informed decision, we diligently attended meetings for both options, seeking to understand the intricacies, challenges, and profound possibilities each presented. Through these sessions, a clear sense of peace and conviction settled upon us: adoption was the path uniquely suited for our family. It has now been six months since we made that life-altering decision, and the accompanying waiting and hoping, while filled with anticipation, is not always an easy road. There are moments when it feels as though everyone around us—our sisters, aunts, mothers, and even fellow grocery shoppers—is joyfully pregnant, and we can’t help but wonder why our journey includes the heartache of infertility. Yet, despite these difficult feelings, we have experienced a growth in this process far beyond anything we ever imagined. Our love for our family, friends, and neighbors has deepened immensely; we cherish every single one of Aliyah’s “firsts” with even greater appreciation; we have grown closer and stronger as a couple, navigating these challenges hand-in-hand; and most significantly, we have gained a richer, more profound perspective on life itself. This journey, though arduous, has forged a resilience and a love that we wouldn’t trade for anything.

And so, here we are, standing before you, vulnerable and hopeful, putting our deepest desires out into the world. We are sharing our story with the heartfelt hope that you, our community, can help us find the child who is meant to complete our family. This process has been an incredibly humbling experience. It has required us to set aside any lingering pride, any notion that “everything is okay” and that “we can do it all on our own.” Instead, we openly embrace the reality that we cannot do this by ourselves. The journey of adoption, particularly independent adoption, often relies on the kindness and outreach of others. We are asking for your help, not just with a simple share, but with a true belief in the power of connection. We sincerely hope that YOU will share our story, amplify our voice, and help us reach the expectant parents who might be searching for a loving, stable home for their child. Your willingness to share means everything to us, as it broadens our network far beyond what we could achieve alone.

And now, here we are again, at another turning point in our shared conversation. You’ve graciously read through our introduction, getting to know a little more about us and our hopes. We’ve extended our heartfelt request for your help in sharing our adoption story. In return for your incredible support and attention, we are excited to promise you something truly delightful. Next week, we will be back to share one of our absolute favorite dessert recipes: the indulgent and irresistible NUTELLA BARS! Consider it a sweet thank you from our family to yours, a small token of our gratitude for walking this journey with us.

Now, I know Carrian might be a little modest about this, but it’s imperative that we express our profound gratitude for ALL that she has done to assist me and my family in “marketing” ourselves. Her dedication and support are invaluable as we strive to grow our family through the beautiful path of adoption. It is no easy feat to put our most vulnerable selves out into the public eye, to actively seek attention and share such a deeply personal journey, all in the hopeful anticipation that an expectant parent, considering placing their child for adoption, might somehow find us. The courage it takes to share our story publicly is immense, and doing so through platforms like Oh Sweet Basil amplifies our reach exponentially. On our own, we simply could not hope to connect with anywhere near the number of people we have been able to engage with thanks to Carrian and her family’s unwavering help and generosity. We feel incredibly fortunate and privileged to be a part of the Oh Sweet Basil community. Our sincere hope is that through these posts, you will not only get to know us better and understand the depth of our desire to build our family, but also feel inspired to share our story with others in your network. And, of course, we hope you’ll continue to enjoy some of our most cherished family recipes along the way. Thank you for your kindness, your support, and for being a vital part of our adoption journey.
