Why This Chicken Cordon Bleu Lasagna Will Become Your New Go-To Recipe

Our journey to create this remarkable dish began with a simple love for lasagna and a desire to experiment with exciting new flavors. My husband, Cade, and I, along with our girls who are increasingly enjoying our culinary adventures, have been exploring various takes on classic dishes. This particular chicken cordon bleu lasagna recipe, proudly featured in our Cookbook, quickly became a standout. It offers a unique flavor profile that sets it apart from standard lasagna, making it a must-try for anyone looking to add a touch of gourmet flair to their meal rotation. The combination of tender chicken, salty ham, and multiple layers of melted cheese creates a symphony of taste and texture that is both familiar and exciting.

Mastering the Art of Make-Ahead Chicken Cordon Bleu Lasagna

One of the many advantages of this chicken cordon bleu lasagna is its versatility, especially when it comes to meal planning. Whether you’re preparing for a busy week, hosting a gathering, or simply want to have a delicious dinner ready at a moment’s notice, this recipe is perfectly suited for making ahead. The flavors meld and deepen over time, often tasting even better the next day.

Freezing Chicken Cordon Bleu Lasagna for Future Enjoyment

If you’re looking to maximize convenience, making and freezing this lasagna is an excellent option. This strategy is ideal for busy weeknights, unexpected guests, or simply stocking your freezer with homemade comfort food. To ensure the best results when freezing, follow these steps:

  1. **Assemble, Don’t Bake (Initially):** Prepare the entire casserole according to the recipe instructions, but stop just before the baking step.
  2. **Choose the Right Container:** Use a freezer-safe container or baking dish. If using a disposable aluminum pan, ensure it’s sturdy enough to handle freezing and baking.
  3. **Seal Tightly:** Cover the assembled lasagna very tightly with at least two layers of aluminum foil. This prevents freezer burn and keeps moisture locked in.
  4. **Label and Date:** Don’t forget to label your container with the dish name and the date it was prepared. This helps you keep track of its freshness.
  5. **Freezer Life:** Properly sealed, your chicken cordon bleu lasagna will keep wonderfully in the freezer for up to 2-3 months.
  6. **Thaw and Bake:** When you’re ready to enjoy, simply remove the lasagna from the freezer and allow it to thaw in the refrigerator overnight. Once thawed, bake it according to the recipe instructions until it’s warmed through and bubbling, usually about an hour, adjusting the time as needed for your oven.

This method transforms the dish into a perfect solution for those hectic evenings when cooking from scratch isn’t an option, but a homemade meal is desired.

Refrigerating Chicken Cordon Bleu Lasagna for Short-Term Storage

For those times when you only need a head start on dinner, assembling the chicken cordon bleu lasagna a day in advance and refrigerating it before baking is a fantastic choice. This allows all the flavors to marry and develop without the commitment of freezing. Simply cover the unbaked lasagna tightly with plastic wrap or aluminum foil and store it in the refrigerator. When it’s time to bake, just remove it from the fridge and proceed with the baking instructions, potentially adding a few extra minutes to the baking time to account for starting from a chilled state.

Secrets to an Unforgettable Chicken Cordon Bleu Lasagna

Crafting this chicken cordon bleu lasagna is surprisingly easy, but there are a few key elements that truly elevate it from good to absolutely phenomenal. These simple tricks ensure every bite is bursting with flavor and boasts that irresistible creamy texture.

The Magic of Fresh Nutmeg in Your White Sauce

Trust me on this one: the most important secret to an incredibly flavorful and balanced white sauce (béchamel) for your chicken cordon bleu lasagna is the addition of fresh nutmeg. While you might not immediately pinpoint its flavor, this humble spice works wonders behind the scenes. It adds a subtle warmth, a delicate nuttiness, and a layer of complexity that transforms a simple cream sauce into something truly special. Grating fresh nutmeg directly into the sauce rather than using pre-ground powder will give you the most vibrant and aromatic results. It’s a small step that yields a significant difference in the overall depth of flavor.

Smart Shortcuts: Rotisserie Chicken for Maximum Flavor and Ease

Efficiency in the kitchen doesn’t mean sacrificing flavor, especially when it comes to this chicken cordon bleu lasagna. We absolutely love using a store-bought rotisserie chicken for this recipe, and for good reason! It’s perfectly cooked, seasoned, and incredibly tender, providing the ideal amount of meat without the extra cooking step. This simple shortcut shaves off considerable prep time, making the recipe much more accessible for busy schedules. Plus, if you end up with a little extra rotisserie chicken, it’s easily repurposed for chicken salad or another quick meal the next day. Of course, you can always cook and shred your own chicken breasts or thighs if you prefer, but the rotisserie option is a game-changer for convenience.

The Golden Crown: Buttery Panko Breadcrumbs

While the creamy layers and savory fillings are undoubtedly the heart of this chicken cordon bleu lasagna, the real winner, for many, lies in the topping. Those golden, buttery panko bread crumbs sprinkled generously over the top are an absolute game-changer! They provide a delightful textural contrast, adding a crispy, crunchy element that beautifully complements the soft noodles and gooey cheese below. Preparing them couldn’t be simpler: just toast them lightly in butter until golden brown. This step, while seemingly minor, adds an extra layer of gourmet appeal and an irresistible crunch that makes every forkful truly satisfying. It’s definitely my favorite part of the dish!

How Long Will Cooked Chicken Cordon Bleu Lasagna Keep in the Refrigerator?

Once baked, your delicious chicken cordon bleu lasagna will remain fresh and flavorful when properly stored in the refrigerator. Ensure it is covered tightly with plastic wrap or aluminum foil. In these conditions, cooked lasagna will last for 3 to 5 days in the refrigerator. It reheats beautifully, making it an excellent option for leftovers or meal prepping for a few days.

There’s nothing like lasagna for comfort food but this chicken cordon bleu lasagna is even more creamy, gooey and totally awesome.

Ingredients

For the Sauce

  • 5 Tablespoons Unsalted Butter
  • 1 Tablespoon Minced Garlic
  • 1/4 Cup Flour
  • 1 Cup Heavy Cream
  • 2 1/2 Cups Milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 Bay Leaf
  • 1/2 teaspoon Ground Nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon Pepper
  • 1/2 Cup Pecorino Romano Cheese
  • 1/3 Cup Swiss Cheese, grated

For the Lasagna

  • 9 Ounces Oven Ready Lasagna Noodles
  • 3 Cups Chicken, cooked (we use rotisserie)
  • 2 Cups Ham, chopped
  • 2 Cups Swiss Cheese, Shredded
  • 1 1/2 Cups Mozzarella, shredded
  • 1/4 Cup Pecorino Romano
  • 2/3 Cup Panko Breadcrumbs
  • 2 Tablespoons Butter (for breadcrumbs)
  • Parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Heat the oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
  2. Spray an 8×13″ baking pan with nonstick spray.
  3. In a large Dutch oven or heavy-bottomed pot over medium heat, melt 5 tablespoons of unsalted butter.
  4. Once the butter is melted, add 1 tablespoon of minced garlic, stirring occasionally for 1 minute until fragrant.
  5. Whisk in 1/4 cup of flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly, until nutty and fragrant but not browned. This creates a roux.
  6. Gradually whisk in 1 cup of heavy cream and 2 1/2 cups of milk until smooth and combined.
  7. Add 1/2 teaspoon of salt, 1 bay leaf, 1/2 teaspoon of ground nutmeg, and 1/4 teaspoon of pepper. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens.
  8. Stir in 1/2 cup of Pecorino Romano cheese and 1/3 cup of grated Swiss cheese. Cook for an additional 5 minutes, or until the cheeses are fully melted and incorporated. Remove the bay leaf and discard. Remove the sauce from the heat.
  9. In a separate nonstick pan over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter.
  10. Once melted, stir in 2/3 cup of panko breadcrumbs. Stir occasionally until the breadcrumbs are lightly golden and crispy. Set aside.
  11. **Assemble the Lasagna:** Scoop about 1/3 cup of the prepared creamy sauce into the bottom of the greased 8×13″ baking dish and spread evenly.
  12. Arrange 4 oven-ready lasagna noodles to cover the bottom of the dish. You may need to break some noodles to fit.
  13. Scoop about 2/3 cup more of the sauce evenly over the noodles. Follow with a layer of 3 cups cooked chicken and 2 cups chopped ham. Sprinkle with approximately 1/2 cup of shredded Swiss cheese and a pinch of Pecorino Romano cheese.
  14. Repeat the layering process: noodles, sauce, chicken and ham, Swiss and Pecorino cheese. Continue until you reach the final noodle layer.
  15. For the top layer, spread the remaining sauce evenly over the noodles. Then, sprinkle generously with the remaining 2 cups of shredded Swiss cheese, 1 1/2 cups of shredded Mozzarella, and 1/4 cup of Pecorino Romano cheese.
  16. Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil that has been lightly sprayed with nonstick spray (to prevent cheese from sticking).
  17. Bake for 20 minutes with the foil on.
  18. After 20 minutes, carefully remove the foil. Sprinkle the reserved golden panko breadcrumbs over the top.
  19. Return the lasagna to the oven and bake for an additional 20 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbling, golden brown, and gooey, and the noodles are soft. If needed, you can broil for the last few minutes for extra browning on the panko.
  20. Remove from oven and let the lasagna sit for 10 minutes before serving. This allows the layers to set and makes for easier slicing. Garnish with fresh parsley, if desired.

Serving Suggestions and Perfect Pairings

Once your chicken cordon bleu lasagna emerges from the oven, golden and bubbling, the anticipation is almost unbearable! But before diving in, remember to let it rest for about 10 minutes. This crucial step allows the layers to set, making for cleaner slices and a more enjoyable serving experience. To complete your meal, consider pairing this rich and savory lasagna with a light, crisp side salad dressed with a vinaigrette to cut through the richness. A simple green salad or a vibrant mixed greens salad would work perfectly. Crusty garlic bread or a warm baguette is also an excellent accompaniment, perfect for soaking up any extra creamy sauce. For drinks, a dry white wine like a Sauvignon Blanc or an unoaked Chardonnay would complement the flavors beautifully, or opt for a sparkling cider for a non-alcoholic choice.

Creative Variations to Customize Your Chicken Cordon Bleu Lasagna

While our chicken cordon bleu lasagna recipe is tried and true, the beauty of cooking lies in customization. Feel free to experiment with these variations to tailor the dish to your personal taste:

  • **Cheese Choices:** Don’t limit yourself to just Swiss and Pecorino Romano. Consider adding a layer of creamy ricotta cheese mixed with an egg and a touch of parsley for a more traditional lasagna feel, or blend in some Gruyère for an even nuttier, more intense flavor. A smoked Gouda could also add an interesting dimension.
  • **Add Vegetables:** Finely chopped sautéed mushrooms, spinach (well-drained), or caramelized onions can be layered in to add extra nutrition and flavor.
  • **Spice It Up:** If you like a little heat, a pinch of red pepper flakes in the white sauce can add a subtle kick without overpowering the classic cordon bleu flavors.
  • **Different Meats:** While chicken and ham are standard, you could try using turkey breast and a different cured meat. Ensure whatever meat you choose is cooked and shredded before adding it to the lasagna.
  • **Homemade Noodles:** If you’re feeling ambitious, homemade lasagna noodles can take this dish to an unparalleled level of freshness and texture.
