Japanese Ceramic Suribachi Mortar & Surikogi Pestle Set with Spout — 7.1 in
Product description
This set contains a traditional suribachi ceramic mortar and a wooden surikogi pestle. The bowl features a ridged, abrasive interior designed to break down seeds and fibrous ingredients efficiently, and a spout to pour out grated or blended mixtures without spilling.
The pieces are crafted in the Mino-yaki tradition, a long-standing Japanese pottery style noted for its simple, elegant glazes and reliable production. The mortar also doubles as an attractive serving dish when not in use, with decorative finishes available.
The bowl’s deep, rounded shape and fairly wide rim make it easy to toss and combine ingredients while giving you room to work. For extra stability during grinding, place a damp towel beneath the bowl. The pestle is made of wood and sized to pair with the mortar for comfortable hand use.
Dimensions: diameter 7.1 inches, height 3.5 inches; weight approximately 1.85 lb. Ideal uses include crushing sesame seeds, grinding garlic, preparing dressings and sauces, and mashing small portions of baby food or pastes.

Pesto, Guac — Ready
Lovely-looking set with a sturdy feel. Arrived well packed. The ridged bowl grinds easily and I appreciate that the ceramic bowl can go in the dishwasher. I picked the ivory dotted style and I’m very pleased.

Ideal for Sesame
Sturdy piece. The 7-inch size suits one to two people; I grind sesame, mix in soy and sugar, then toss with spinach — works great.

Pestle Issues — Stains and Splinters
The ceramic bowl is attractive and durable, but the wooden pestle arrived rough and later developed stains after use with oil and herbs. It seems better for dry seeds than wet blends. I kept the bowl and purchased a different pestle elsewhere.
