Penrose Espresso Blend Whole Bean Coffee — 10 oz
Product description
What you get: a 10-ounce bag of whole bean Penrose Espresso Blend, roasted in St. Louis. The package contains freshly roasted Arabica beans meant for espresso and other concentrated brews.
Flavor profile: the blend highlights sweet graham cracker, chocolate, a touch of nutty character and hints of dried berry. The overall acidity is restrained and the mouthfeel tends toward smooth and slightly creamy.
Origins and composition: current lots draw from Peru, Colombia and El Salvador. The exact component beans are adjusted seasonally to maintain balance and consistency.
Roasting and labeling: beans are roasted locally in St. Louis to preserve freshness. Many bags include a roast date so you can track how recently the beans were roasted.
How to use: whole beans are suitable for espresso machines, drip brewers and pour-over or other filter methods. Grind to match your method—fine for espresso, medium for drip—and brew to taste. Larger bag sizes are available for those who prefer buying in quantity.
Pros
- Smooth, low-acidity cup
- Clear graham and chocolate notes
- Roasted fresh in St. Louis
Cons
- Bag can lack detailed origin/roast labeling
- Milder than dark-roast espresso lovers prefer
- Aroma could be more pronounced
VerdictPenrose is a freshly roasted, approachable espresso blend with a smooth, low-acid profile and clear chocolate and graham notes. It works well as straight espresso and in milk drinks, and the seasonal bean mix keeps the cup balanced. Some find the aroma and roast information wanting, and it may be lighter than darker-roast espresso fans prefer.

Completely hooked
I was thrilled to find a smooth, rich espresso that isn’t bitter. The cup is creamy with a lovely aroma. I share it with friends abroad and they always ask for more. Five stars from me.

Strong off smell
Opened the bag and the beans had an unpleasant odor. Not for me.

Gentle and easy to drink
I drink mine black and find it lighter than I usually prefer, but that means I can have several cups without stomach issues. Very smooth.

Fresh beans but missing details
Beans arrived very fresh, but the bag didn’t list origin or roast level (had to check the website). I’d call it light/medium; it’s smooth and fine for cappuccinos, though the aroma could be stronger.

Fresh and well balanced
My bag had a roast date under a month old. Aroma was pleasant, acidity subdued, and the strength matched the description. I enjoy the overall flavor.

Smooth with subtle chocolate
Low acidity and a smooth finish. I detect a hint of cocoa, similar to adding a pinch of cocoa powder. If you drink this often, larger bags are available.

Nice Central American-style espresso
I pulled espresso in an Aeropress and got great flavor right away. Not an overly dark roast—chocolate notes come through as expected from Central American beans. Good value for quality.

Love that they print roast dates
The roast date is on the bag, which I appreciate. The flavor leans toward graham and chocolate—almost s'mores-like—and it makes an excellent iced mocha. Straight espresso was fine, if a touch sharp from my technique.
