Shadowbound: A Fight for Faith

From my earliest childhood memories, I vividly pictured a life filled with love, laughter, and the warmth of a bustling family home. I dreamed of falling deeply in love, walking down the aisle, welcoming precious babies into the world, and creating a beautiful sanctuary where joy echoed through every room. It was a vision etched in my heart, a picture of domestic bliss that seemed effortlessly attainable. However, as the innocence of youth gave way to the realities of adulthood, I quickly learned that sometimes, the journey to a dream home and the blessing of children can be far more complex and challenging than any childhood fantasy could ever prepare you for. Life, with its unexpected twists and turns, often presents hurdles that redefine what “happily ever after” truly means, teaching profound lessons in patience, resilience, and unwavering faith along the way. This is a story about navigating those unforeseen challenges, and ultimately, finding our way home.

The Unexpected Path to Our Unseen Home

One of the most extraordinary aspects of our journey is that we purchased this house without me ever stepping foot inside it. The circumstances that led to this unconventional decision were born from a period of immense personal struggle and physical incapacitation. I desperately tried to participate in the house-hunting process, to feel the space and envision our future within its walls, but my body was simply too broken to allow it. A debilitating illness had taken hold, rendering me almost completely bedridden and utterly incapable of such a significant physical and emotional undertaking. This wasn’t just a minor inconvenience; it was a profound testament to the trials we faced and the incredible faith that guided us through.

It’s only been a few years since that pivotal time, yet I can still vividly recall the precise moment our lives took a dramatic turn, the memory as clear as if it happened yesterday. For two long years prior, Cade and I had been relentlessly searching for a new home. Our journey was a rollercoaster of emotions: moments of exhilarating excitement, pockets of hopeful anticipation, periods of profound confusion, waves of deep frustration, and ultimately, a quiet decision to simply hold on, to trust that the right opportunity would present itself when the time was right. Isn’t it truly remarkable, this deep, intrinsic yearning we all possess to find “home”? This isn’t a mere coincidence; it speaks to a fundamental human need for belonging, for a sanctuary, a place where our souls can truly rest. It’s a profound concept, one that deserves a moment of quiet reflection, but for the purpose of sharing our story, I’ll continue with the unfolding events that led us to our current haven.

A Year of Waiting: How Divine Timing Revealed Its Purpose

The first year of our extended house hunt passed with agonizing slowness, marked by countless showings, dashed hopes, and the persistent feeling that nothing was quite right. Then, unexpectedly, a significant development occurred: Cade received an enticing job offer, perfectly situated about an hour south of the area where we had been so intensely focused our search. In that instant, a profound sense of clarity washed over us. Ah, it all made perfect sense now! The persistent feeling of unease, the subtle hints that none of those previous houses were meant for us – it was divine timing, guiding us away from what wasn’t meant to be. I am immensely grateful that we didn’t force a fit, that we listened to that inner quiet voice, even when it led to prolonged uncertainty. But with this new geographical shift, the question of “where” resurfaced with renewed intensity. The search for our elusive dream home continued, stretching into its second year, still yielding no definitive answers or suitable options.

Embracing a New Path: The Courageous Decision to Adopt

Concurrent with our protracted home search, we arrived at another monumental decision that would forever alter the landscape of our family. Due to the severe health risks associated with a potential future pregnancy, particularly given my previous experience with hyperemesis gravidarum, it became clear that conceiving another biological child was not a viable or safe option for me. After much prayer, deeply emotional discussions, and careful consideration, we bravely decided to pursue adoption. It was a choice born from love, a profound yearning to expand our family, and a resolute commitment to embrace parenthood through a different, yet equally beautiful, path. The initial adoption paperwork began, and despite the inherent anxieties, we felt a deep sense of peace, a comforting assurance that we were moving in the right direction, actively searching for two missing pieces of our family puzzle. I articulate this decision with a certain swiftness now, but one day, I promise to share the full, raw, and incredibly challenging emotional journey that led us to this life-altering choice, detailing the fears, the hopes, and the ultimate surrender to a higher plan.

Despite these significant steps forward in our family planning, the housing situation remained stubbornly stagnant. Every house we toured seemed promising on the surface, offering attractive features and good locations. Yet, invariably, as we drove away, an unsettling feeling would creep in, a collective sense that something was fundamentally amiss. It simply wasn’t right for us. How could this be? This was a righteous desire, a deeply felt need to provide a stable, loving home for our growing family, and we felt so ready to embark on this new chapter. It seemed that everyone else around us effortlessly found their perfect place and smoothly transitioned into their new lives, while we remained frustratingly still, stuck in a state of limbo. The burden of this prolonged waiting, this constant striving without visible progress, was incredibly hard on our spirits.

You Are Not Alone: Shared Experiences of Waiting and Perseverance

Perhaps you find yourself in a similar season of life? Are you standing still, feeling the weight of uncertainty, pouring your heart and soul into a desire that seems stubbornly out of reach? Are you making every conceivable effort, dedicating all your time, energy, and prayers to a particular outcome, only to be met with deafening silence and no tangible results? It’s one thing to acknowledge that perhaps you could be exerting more effort, or making different choices. But when a goal consumes your very being, when it’s what defines your daily focus and fervent prayers, and yet absolutely NOTHING materializes, well, that kind of stagnation simply hurts. It’s a pain that touches the core of your being, challenging your faith and resolve.

It was during one such morning, as I prepared for my daily workout, that a scripture profoundly resonated with me, offering a beacon of hope in my despair. I read about a remarkable man named Nephi. His family had been divinely commanded to relocate, and despite their unwavering obedience to this sacred call, they had endured immense suffering and hardship along their journey. Then, one morning, a powerful voice from the Lord called out to him, instructing him to “arise and go up unto the mountain.” There, amidst the solitude, he was given an extraordinary and seemingly impossible task: to build a ship. This was not just any ship; it was a vessel unlike any he had ever constructed before, requiring him to place his complete and utter reliance on the Lord for divine guidance and assistance in its creation. This ancient story felt remarkably current, speaking directly to my own feelings of inadequacy and the monumental tasks ahead.

Embracing the Pause: The Power of Waiting for Divine Inspiration

As I finished reading Nephi’s account, the power of its message overwhelmed me. I immediately fell to my knees in fervent prayer, my heart pouring out to the heavens. “What do I need to do to build my ship?” I pleaded, a metaphor for preparing for the next, unknown chapter of our lives. “How can I prepare myself, both physically and spiritually, so that I can go forward when the time is right?” The answer, though not a spoken word, came as a powerful, unmistakable impression, a deep knowing in my soul. I felt it with every fiber of my being. At that moment, we still had no promising homes to look at, no active offers on any properties, and absolutely no clear direction as to where we were headed next. And yet, fueled by this profound spiritual prompting, I began to pack. Every single day, more and more items came down from our walls, were carefully wrapped, and systematically placed into moving boxes. I began the arduous, yet faith-filled, process of packing our entire lives, preparing to move without even the slightest idea of our ultimate destination, trusting implicitly that the Lord would guide us when the time was right. It was an act of profound faith, a physical manifestation of my belief that our “ship” was being built, even if I couldn’t yet see the blueprints.

Looking back, I never in a million years could have foreseen or accurately scripted the extraordinary events that would unfold in the next year of our story. It was a chapter brimming with unexpected turns, profound lessons, and ultimately, a journey that proved to be far more miraculous and divinely orchestrated than any childhood dream could have ever imagined. This is just the beginning of how our unseen home came into our lives, a true testament to patience, faith, and the power of divine timing.
