Growing up, the sight of a glass jar of teriyaki sauce, often with a distinct green label I vividly remember, always filled me with excitement. It was a sure sign that dinner would be something truly special and deeply flavorful. Those childhood memories forged a lifelong love for teriyaki, a versatile sauce that continues to inspire countless culinary creations in my kitchen. I recall many evenings in high school, after long days packed with schoolwork and extracurriculars, reaching for that trusty jar to whip up a quick teriyaki chicken quesadilla – a slightly unconventional but surprisingly delicious snack that perfectly hit the spot.

Today, my passion for teriyaki remains as strong as ever, constantly leading me to discover new and exciting ways to incorporate its sweet and savory goodness into our family meals. While our website boasts a variety of beloved teriyaki dishes, I’ve been eager to share a recipe that features one of our absolute favorite ingredients: noodles! This longing gave birth to our Teriyaki Chicken Noodles – a dish that has quickly become a cherished family favorite, and for very good reason.

Understanding Teriyaki Sauce: Is it Low Carb?

When considering teriyaki sauce, it’s important to understand its nutritional profile, especially regarding carbohydrate content. Most traditional teriyaki sauces derive the majority of their calories from carbohydrates, primarily due to the sugar and thickening agents like cornstarch often used in their preparation. A single tablespoon of many commercial teriyaki sauces typically contains around 3 grams of carbohydrates, 1 gram of protein, and negligible fat.

For individuals managing diabetes or following a low-carb diet, moderation is key. While many store-bought options can be high in sugar, there are an increasing number of low-carb or sugar-free teriyaki sauces available on the market. Alternatively, making your own teriyaki sauce from scratch allows for complete control over ingredients, enabling you to reduce or substitute sweeteners to fit your dietary needs. With careful selection or homemade preparation, teriyaki sauce can certainly be a flavorful condiment choice, even for those mindful of carb intake.

Is Teriyaki Chicken Gluten-Free?

The primary source of gluten in most teriyaki sauces is standard soy sauce, which typically contains wheat in addition to soybeans, salt, and water. Therefore, if you’re looking to enjoy teriyaki chicken while adhering to a gluten-free diet, the choice of soy sauce is crucial. Fortunately, there’s a simple and delicious solution: Tamari.

Tamari is a type of Japanese soy sauce that is naturally gluten-free. While it shares many characteristics with regular soy sauce, Tamari often boasts a richer, milder, and less salty flavor profile, which can actually enhance the overall taste of your teriyaki dishes. In our own kitchen experiments, we’ve consistently found that using Tamari results in the best flavor for our perfect teriyaki chicken recipe. Even for those of us who don’t strictly follow a gluten-free diet, the superior taste of Tamari makes it our preferred choice for an authentic and incredibly flavorful teriyaki experience.

Is Teriyaki Chicken Healthy?

Teriyaki chicken can be a healthy and satisfying meal, provided it’s prepared thoughtfully. Chicken itself is an excellent source of lean protein and essential nutrients, making it a valuable component of a balanced diet. However, the overall healthfulness of teriyaki chicken largely depends on a few key factors: the cooking method, the ingredients used, and portion control.

While teriyaki sauce offers fantastic flavor, many commercial varieties can be high in sugar and sodium. To make your teriyaki chicken healthier, consider using a low-sodium teriyaki sauce, a homemade version where you can control the sugar content, or Tamari as a soy sauce substitute. Opt for healthy cooking techniques like grilling, baking, or pan-searing with minimal oil, rather than deep-frying. Crucially, pairing teriyaki chicken with an abundance of nutrient-dense foods, such as a generous serving of fresh vegetables and whole grains, will create a well-rounded and nutritious meal. Enjoyed in moderation and prepared with care, teriyaki chicken can absolutely be a part of a healthy lifestyle.

The secret to truly outstanding Teriyaki Chicken Noodles lies not just in the sauce, but in perfectly cooked chicken. We don’t just advocate for throwing it in a pan and hoping for the best. To achieve succulent, juicy chicken every single time, we highly recommend following our detailed guide on How to Cook Chicken in a Pan. This method ensures your chicken is cooked through without becoming dry or tough. Once cooked, set your chicken aside to rest. This step is just as vital as the cooking itself! Resting allows the muscle fibers to relax and the juices to redistribute throughout the meat, resulting in incredibly tender and juicy chicken that elevates your entire noodle dish.

Freshly chopped colorful vegetables ready for stir-frying, to be added to the Teriyaki Chicken Noodles.

The vegetables in this dish are a true highlight, boasting a delightful crisp-tender texture achieved through a quick sauté, reminiscent of a classic stir-fry. Stir-frying, an ancient technique for rapidly cooking food in a hot pan, allows vegetables to retain their vibrant colors, fresh flavors, and nutritional value. We love to load our Teriyaki Chicken Noodles with a colorful medley of carrots, broccoli, and bell peppers, but feel free to customize with your favorite stir-fry vegetables like snap peas, bok choy, or mushrooms. The key is to cook them just enough so they’re tender but still have a satisfying bite.

While noodles and sauce are a perpetually good combination, this recipe introduces a subtle twist that truly takes it from “awesome” to “out of this world” good. Right before adding the cooked chicken, eggs, and noodles, we incorporate a small swirl of butter into the sautéed vegetables. This isn’t necessarily a “healthy” twist, so if you’re aiming for a lighter dish, you can certainly omit it. However, that touch of butter melts into the sauce, adding an incredible depth of richness and a silky texture that coats every strand of noodle and every piece of chicken, creating an unforgettable savory experience. It’s that little something extra that makes this dish truly special.

And yes, you read that right – there’s egg in this dish! This addition is where our Teriyaki Chicken Noodles get their unique, multi-faceted flavor profile. Imagine the best parts of fried rice, the savory goodness of teriyaki chicken, the crispness of a stir-fry, and the comforting texture of sesame noodles, all coming together in one harmonious bite. The scrambled egg adds a wonderful layer of texture and a delicate richness that complements the bold teriyaki sauce beautifully. It’s a combination that might sound a little unconventional but tastes like pure culinary genius – sweet mercy!

Ingredients

  • 1 Pound Angel Hair or Spaghetti Noodles
  • 2 1/2 Cups [Teriyaki Sauce]
  • 1 Egg, slightly whisked
  • 1 Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breast, large, or 2 small
  • 1 Tablespoon Olive Oil
  • 1 Tablespoon Butter
  • 2 Cloves Garlic, minced
  • 1 Cup Sliced Carrots, heaping
  • 1 1/2 Cups Broccoli, trimmed and steamed
  • 3/4 Cup Mini Bell Peppers, sliced
  • 1 Cup Snow Peas, heaping
  • Sesame Seeds, for garnish
  • Green Onions, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Place the chicken in a ziploc bag with 1/2 cup of Teriyaki Sauce.
  2. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or up to 1 day, allowing the chicken to marinate and absorb the flavors.
  3. Lightly drizzle a small fry pan with oil and heat over medium-high heat. Add the slightly whisked egg.
  4. Tilt the pan to coat with the egg, gently lifting the sides with a spatula until set. Flip and cook for a few more seconds. Remove to a cutting board, slice into strips, and set aside.
  5. Heat a clean pan (or the same pan wiped clean) over high heat. Add a drizzle of olive oil, then add the marinated chicken.
  6. Reduce heat to medium-low and cook for 5-6 minutes, following the directions for perfectly pan-cooked chicken.
  7. Flip the chicken and cook for an additional 5-6 minutes, or until thoroughly cooked through and no longer pink in the center.
  8. Transfer the cooked chicken to a cutting board and allow it to rest for a few minutes. This crucial step helps the juices redistribute, ensuring tender and moist chicken.
  9. Meanwhile, cook the angel hair or spaghetti noodles according to package instructions until al dente. Drain well.
  10. Return the chicken pan (without the chicken) to medium heat. Add the olive oil and quickly stir in the minced garlic. Cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
  11. Add the sliced carrots and bell peppers to the pan and sauté until they are tender-crisp.
  12. Stir in the steamed broccoli, snow peas, and butter. Cook for another 1-2 minutes, just until all vegetables are heated through and the butter has melted, coating the veggies beautifully.
  13. Slice or chop the rested chicken into bite-sized pieces. Add the sliced chicken, remaining teriyaki sauce, scrambled egg strips, and cooked noodles to the pan with the vegetables. Toss gently to combine all ingredients, ensuring everything is well coated in the delicious sauce.
  14. Serve hot, garnished with a sprinkle of sesame seeds and freshly chopped green onions for an extra burst of flavor and visual appeal.
