Do you remember our friends that were trying to adopt? Many of you have reached out, eager for an update, and we are absolutely thrilled to finally share our journey with you! Prepare for an emotional read; I certainly found myself shedding tears as I wrote this, reflecting on the profound miracle of adoption.

The Agonizing Beauty of Waiting for Adoption
It’s truly remarkable how time takes on an entirely different dimension when you’re caught in the throes of anticipation. Whether you’re starving and patiently (or impatiently!) awaiting your meal at a bustling restaurant, or perhaps counting down the minutes to a significant life event, the clock seems to deliberately slow its pace, each tick echoing the stretched moments of expectation. We experienced this phenomenon acutely as we yearned for our family to expand through adoption. There were countless days that felt like an eternity, moments when the wait was so overwhelming it was almost unbearable, akin to a deep hunger pang that wouldn’t subside. Yet, as thrilling new chapters have unfolded, time has paradoxically accelerated, and nearly nine months have flown by since our last update. We hope you haven’t forgotten us entirely, because we simply couldn’t miss this opportunity to share the extraordinary experiences we’ve had since then. Our heartfelt hope is that our journey, with all its highs and lows, might offer a beacon of hope and encouragement to someone else navigating their own path towards building a family.
Let’s rewind and immerse ourselves in the heart of our adoption story.
The Emotional Rollercoaster of the Adoption Waiting List
Without a doubt, the most challenging aspect of the entire adoption process for me was the relentless waiting. Those initial months were a blur of constant phone checking, my heart leaping with every notification, wondering if this was the moment a prospective birth mother had reached out. I remember vividly one specific instance right at the very beginning when an email popped up from the “It’s About Love” website! My fingers fumbled, unable to open it fast enough, my excitement soaring. It took a second, amidst the adrenaline rush, to realize it was from Dave, who later confessed he just wanted to ensure the system was working. Well, it certainly worked at triggering a mini heart attack! As the weeks bled into months, the initial flurry of hope settled into a quiet, almost agonizing patience. We didn’t receive any direct contacts from birth mothers. Our caseworkers would occasionally present us with a few potential situations, but after much prayer and careful consideration, we felt a distinct lack of peace about them. Looking back, we wholeheartedly believe those specific opportunities weren’t meant for us. We now see God’s guiding hand, protecting us from paths that wouldn’t have led to our destined family. And so, we continued to wait, trusting in divine timing. Then, six months after we received our official approval to adopt, our world shifted. We were contacted by a remarkable woman, our birth mom, whom we’ll refer to as L.

A Heartfelt Connection: Meeting Our Birth Mother
From our very first interactions, a powerful sense of connection bloomed. L immediately struck us as sincere, possessing a wonderful sense of humor, and deeply humble. Her genuine desire to learn every detail about us was incredibly touching. Her maturity and thoughtfulness in responding to some of the difficult and sensitive questions we posed during those initial conversations truly impressed us. But above all, it was her unwavering determination to find the absolute best family for her baby that resonated most profoundly. We exchanged emails daily for a couple of weeks, pouring our hearts out, sharing our lives and our dreams. By the time she felt ready to meet in person, we felt we had already established such a close bond that we playfully warned her: “Be prepared, we’re going to give you a big hug when we see you!” And indeed, we did. My own nerves were practically vibrating with anticipation; I even brought a batch of homemade chocolate chip cookies to our meeting, because, let’s be honest, who doesn’t feel more at ease with warm cookies nearby? That first meeting allowed us to learn so much more about L and her incredible mom. We had emphasized to L beforehand that there was absolutely no pressure to choose us simply because she agreed to meet. Just like L, our deepest desire was for the right baby to find their way into our family – the child who was meant to be with us, who truly belonged with us. We believed, with every fiber of our being, that the universe had a plan.
L’s Selfless Act: A Choice Born of Love
By mid-December, after much soul-searching and prayer on her part, L made the incredibly courageous decision to choose us. I feel it’s imperative to share a little more about L’s profound journey. In the early stages of her pregnancy, she had firmly decided she would parent her baby. With admirable determination, she began meticulously preparing for motherhood. She changed high schools to a program more conducive to parenting, secured a job, and diligently acquired all the necessities: a crib, a rocking chair, baby clothes, toys, blankets – everything a new mother would need. L was doing everything within her power to be fully prepared. Then, one day at church, when she was approximately 28 weeks along, she experienced a powerful, undeniable spiritual prompting. She felt with striking clarity that what her baby truly needed was a dad – and the birth father was, tragically, not a presence in the picture. In that moment, L came to the heart-wrenchwrenching, yet profoundly loving realization that this baby wasn’t meant for her to parent, but rather for a family that could provide both a mother and a father. Even as I type these words, I find myself becoming emotional, overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of the selfless choice she made. Immediately after church that day, she began her search for adoptive couples, a testament to her unwavering love and dedication to her child’s future.
Building a Family Through Shared Moments
The nine weeks that followed were a whirlwind of connection and shared experiences. We made a point of getting together with L once or twice a week. Our time together was diverse and joyful: sharing breakfast, catching a movie, enjoying game nights with her family, hosting her for dinner at our home, taking maternity pictures that beautifully captured her journey, and even celebrating Valentine’s Day together. Each interaction deepened our bond, allowing us to truly get to know L for the amazing person she is, beyond her role as a birth mother. We cherished the invaluable opportunity to be present and supportive throughout the latter part of the pregnancy of our baby. As L’s due date drew near, a renewed sense of anticipation and anxiety washed over us, but it was tempered by an unshakeable trust in L. We trusted completely that she would always do what was best for her baby, even if, in the deepest part of our hearts, that meant she might choose a path that didn’t include us. Our friendship and the bond we had cultivated with L had grown so strong that we simply knew, without a doubt, that everything would unfold exactly as it was meant to.
The Day Our Lives Changed: Birth and First Glimpses
L went into the hospital two days before her scheduled due date. Her initial birth plan had graciously included me in the delivery room, a privilege I deeply cherished. However, on that crucial morning, medical complications arose; doctors diagnosed L with preeclampsia, necessitating an immediate C-section. We rushed to the hospital, determined to see L before she was taken in for surgery, to offer our love and support. And then, once again, we waited. This time, the waiting room felt filled with a potent mix of hope, fear, and breathless anticipation. Approximately an hour later, the doors opened, and we were finally able to go in and see L and our precious baby girl! There are truly no words that can adequately express the overwhelming surge of emotions that hit me in that moment: seeing L, utterly exhausted, trembling from the ordeal, yet radiating a profound sense of peace. And then, there was our beautiful baby girl – wide-eyed, impossibly tiny, and perfect in every way. We stayed for the better part of the day, soaking in every moment, before respectfully allowing L to get the much-needed rest she deserved. As we left the hospital that evening, a bittersweet feeling washed over me, a sense of incompleteness, as though we were leaving a piece of our hearts, a part of our newfound family, behind in that hospital room. Over the next three days, our visits were filled with tender, precious moments, alongside some undeniably difficult ones, as we spent time with L and our baby girl.
A Sacred Trust: The Final Decision
There were moments, understandably, when L grappled with the thought of parenting, moments of profound doubt and internal struggle. Yet, each time she entertained that idea and turned to prayer, she described feeling an unsettling sickness in her stomach. Conversely, when she prayed about placing her baby with us, an overwhelming sense of peace would wash over her. On the fourth day, the day of formal placement, we were scheduled to meet at the hospital to sign the crucial legal papers and then… to wait just a little longer. We knew that the moment we saw L’s caseworker emerge, it would signify that L had signed her relinquishment papers. Even through this intense period, we held onto our trust and didn’t allow worry to consume us. The hardest part, truly, was contemplating the immense struggle and pain that L was undoubtedly enduring during this incredibly profound and selfless act. Soon after, L’s caseworker appeared, her expression conveying a mix of solemnity and grace, and she led us towards L’s room. Again, words fail to fully capture the sanctity and tenderness of that moment.

We entered her hospital room, where the lights were softly dimmed, casting a gentle glow. Tears welled in L’s eyes, and in her mom’s. We hugged them both, tightly, wordlessly conveying our support and love – what else could we possibly do in such a sacred space? L then gently placed our baby girl into my arms, and in that same motion, I had to hug L and hold her close. Through that embrace, I desperately tried to convey the depth of love and gratitude I felt for her, and the unwavering support I wanted to offer. Dave and I both shared a few heartfelt words of our immense love and gratitude for L, struggling to articulate the profound emotions that filled the room. There were some truly beautiful, silent moments in that sacred space, moments filled with unspoken understanding and deep respect. Before L and her mom left, we made plans for L to come visit the following week. We exchanged our “see you soon”s, full of both hope and a lingering sadness, and then watched as L departed. It was done.
The Bittersweet Miracle of Adoption
It was such a bittersweet moment, one where our hearts were bursting with joy and excitement to finally hold this beautiful, sweet girl in our arms, knowing we were headed home to begin our new life as a family. Yet, simultaneously, our beautiful birth mom was navigating an ocean of grief and pain, having made the most selfless choice imaginable. Adoption, in its purest form, truly is the most profound and selfless sacrifice anyone could ever make, and L performed this act with such incredible, unconditional love. Through this entire journey of adoption, we have learned more about love, empathy, and the boundless capacity of the human heart than we ever thought possible. Our love has not only grown exponentially for our precious new baby girl, but also for her brave and loving birth mom. We genuinely believe we have been immeasurably blessed by this challenging yet ultimately miraculous experience. This journey has not only brought us our daughter but has also expanded our understanding of family, connection, and the incredible power of love that transcends traditional definitions.
