Fluke Networks MT-8200-49A Copper Cable Tester (Micromapper)
Product description
The Micromapper MT-8200-49A is a compact handheld tester built to check copper twisted-pair network cabling. The package typically contains the main tester unit, a single removable remote identifier for far-end testing, a quick-start guide with wiring diagrams, and a set of batteries so the device can be used immediately.
The enclosure is molded from impact-resistant ABS plastic with rubberized accents on high-wear points for grip. The unit is pocket-sized — roughly 15 cm long and about 7 cm across at its widest — so it fits easily on a belt or in a tool pouch. Operation is straightforward: plug an RJ45 cable into the tester, select tone or test mode, and read the LED indicators to determine wiremap status or fault type.
Functionally, the Micromapper tests twisted-pair cable assemblies for open conductors, shorted pairs, crossed and reversed lines, and split-pair conditions that can degrade Ethernet performance. A dedicated remote identifier lets a single technician test both ends of a run without an assistant. The tester also produces an audible tone to work with a compatible tone probe for tracing cables through walls or bundles. The front panel uses a clear LED fault display to show specific wiring errors at a glance, and the quick reference diagrams printed in the guide make it easy to reproduce test setups and intentionally generate faults for training or troubleshooting.
Pros
- Clear LED indicators for quick fault identification
- Remote identifier enables solo testing
- Sturdy, pocket-sized construction
Cons
- No protective case included
- Control switch can be prone to damage in tool bags
- Higher cost than basic competitors
VerdictThe MT-8200-49A Micromapper is a focused, dependable tool for routine network cable verification and simple tracing. It reliably identifies open circuits, shorts, crossed pairs, reversed pairs and split pairs, and its remote unit allows one technician to test cabling alone. The clear fault LEDs and tone capability make locating and diagnosing problems straightforward. It lacks a protective case in

Worth buying after a cheap model failed
I first tried a budget unit that stopped working randomly. I upgraded to this Fluke tester and haven’t regretted paying more — it’s robust and reliable.

Long-lived, dependable tester
I used cheaper units that failed after brief use. I bought this Fluke model years ago and it’s still working perfectly — reliable operation and no unexpected failures over long-term use.

Simple testing; buy the probe for tracing
This unit does wiremap and fault checks very well. The housing is solid. It doesn’t include a case, so I purchased a third-party pouch, and I paired it with Fluke’s tone probe to trace cables — together they cover both testing and tracing needs.

Essential for data techs who trace cables often
Compact and well suited for day-to-day data work. Performs wiremap checks and, when used with a tone probe, makes locating runs straightforward. I use it daily and find it indispensable.

Comparison with similar units
This and another well-known brand appear to share an OEM origin; some clones mimic the design. Packaging varies: some come without a case, others include one. The useful part is the ability to show wiremap errors, opens, shorts and split pairs — the split-pair detection is uncommon and helpful. Tone output works with standard probes. Battery types differ among copies; the genuine units use common AAA cells and retain the remote firmly, while cheaper copies may use unusual cells or have looser remotes.

Good for small setups, watch the switch
A compact, capable tester for small networks. I did have the on/off/tone switch break after it was tossed in a tool bag, so that control could use a more rugged design.

Great functionality, a bit pricey
Works exactly as advertised: tones, shows miswires, shorts and reversed lines. I use it frequently and it’s very reliable. It’s on the expensive side compared with some alternatives, but it delivers consistent results.

Handy for hobbyists and occasional network work
I’m a software person who dabbles in home and volunteer network installs. A colleague suggested this Micromapper for basic cable faults, including split pairs. It arrived with batteries that needed replacing, but with fresh cells it worked right away. I tested a few good runs that passed, then used the quick-start diagrams and some old Cat5 to intentionally miswire pairs — the tester identified the problems as expected and was easy to operate.
