National Geographic Break-Open Geode Kit — 10 Real Geodes for Kids
Product description
This kit contains ten authentic geode specimens, a pair of protective goggles, and a full-color learning guide that explains how geodes form and what to look for inside. The geodes are natural rock specimens that were hand-selected to present a mix of internal crystal structures and textures.
Specimens vary in size — you may receive pieces as small as a ping-pong ball or as large as a tennis ball — and show a range of crystal habits from drusy quartz to agate-lined interiors. All pieces are genuine, unprocessed geodes, so interior color and crystal size are unpredictable.
The included goggles are basic eye protection for the cracking activity. To open geodes safely, do this outdoors on a hard surface, use a cloth or container to keep fragments contained, and break them with a hammer or by striking against concrete if you prefer. Adult supervision and caution are recommended, since fragments can fly and some geodes are very tough to split.
The illustrated learning guide provides age-appropriate background on geology and crystal formation, making this kit a hands-on supplement to science learning and a compact STEM experience for children and beginners. Blue Marble, the developer, has built a reputation for educational play products and designed this set to combine discovery with simple, guided instruction.

Well received but prepare for a mess
Gave this to my 8-year-old for his birthday and he loved it. It gets messy when you crack them open, and eye protection is essential because shards fly, so use the goggles and supervise.

Big hit with a young child
Bought this for my 7-year-old nephew’s birthday and he absolutely loved it. Great gift for a small child who likes hands-on surprises.

Entertaining even if all white inside
Had a great evening doing this with my son. He loved it, though every geode we opened was white inside — I hoped for color. A small chisel would have been useful since some were stubborn. Still worth repeating for the look on his face when one finally split.

Perfect surprise for a child
Great gift for a youngster. Bought this last holiday and my 6-year-old grandson was thrilled opening them. We cracked them outdoors on a hard surface, wrapped each rock in an old rag, and tapped them with a rubber hammer. I had fun too and would recommend this set as a family activity—good value for an engaging science experience.

Simple, messy fun
These were entertaining — most were white and we found two darker ones. They’re hard to break; my husband and I ended up throwing some against the sidewalk. Still, it was a fun activity and we revealed some attractive crystal interiors.

Happy with the set we got
I debated buying this but went for it and was pleased. A few took longer to break (some were nodules), so I used a heavy-duty flathead screwdriver, a hammer, and a vise clamp to steady them while chipping away. About half were clear quartz and the rest had some color. Overall worked well with some patience and the right tools.

Cheap thrills for grownups and kids alike
We’re a group of thirtysomethings and had a blast smashing these with friends. The set includes ten geodes (ours were mostly drusy quartz) and the variety makes it worth it. Most were clear/white; one was very solid with mixed crystals. Some are tough to open, but that’s part of the enjoyment. If you want rare colored gems, this isn’t a treasure-hunter kit, but it’s great for a casual, hands-on afternoon.

Bought twice — both times rewarding
We’ve purchased this kit twice and were happy both times. The first set had mostly 2-inch pieces and one showed a pale purple tint; the second set included a milky pink and a small agate section. The educational guide was a hit, and the kids loved discovering the natural surprises inside.

Nice geodes, a bit pricey for some
My little nephew enjoyed breaking these open and we were pleased with the quality of the geodes. I didn’t give five stars because the set felt a little on the expensive side, but the overall experience was fun.
