Marine
Outboard Engine Kill Switch Lanyard for Mercury/Tohatsu Motors
Product description
This kit includes a kill switch assembly with a braided nylon safety cord, a molded ABS plastic switch housing, and aluminum-alloy attachment hardware for mounting to a throttle or tiller handle.
The lanyard is made from braided nylon for wear resistance, the switch body is molded ABS plastic to resist moisture, and the mounting clip and terminal hardware use aluminum alloy for corrosion resistance in marine environments.
The compact housing is sized to fit standard outboard throttle grips and tiller handles; the cord is long enough to secure to the operator while allowing normal movement. It is intended to break / open the ignition circuit (or close it, depending on wiring) when pulled, immediately stopping the engine.
Fitting is simple: attach the switch to the handle, route the wiring to the ignition coil or kill terminal, and secure the lanyard to the operator. Many installs require only basic crimping or screw connections; some engines need a ring terminal added to ground the coil or to match the ignition wiring convention.
This lanyard is suitable for outboard motors, small marine craft, lawn equipment, and similar engines. Before use, verify whether your engine requires the circuit to be closed with the lanyard attached or closed when the lanyard is removed, and wire accordingly.
We stand behind the item and offer customer support for any issues during installation or operation.
Pros
- Durable materials and corrosion-resistant fittings
- Easy, tool-free mounting to most throttle handles
- Works across multiple small-engine applications
Cons
- Some wiring configurations require modification
- Not compatible with all personal watercraft without rewiring
- May need a crimped ring terminal for grounding on certain engines
VerdictA straightforward safety lanyard assembly that provides a reliable emergency shut-off for outboard and small-engine applications. The unit uses a braided nylon rope, ABS plastic housing, and aluminum alloy hardware for durability. Installation is usually quick and tool-free on common throttle or tiller grips; however, confirm electrical polarity/contacts for your ignition type before finalizing wi

Not suitable for my jetski
Build quality is solid, but it won't work for my vintage jetski. This unit closes the circuit when the lanyard is pulled, while the jetski needs the circuit closed with the lanyard installed and open when removed.

Retrofit on older Mercury
Installed on an older Mercury 5hp. Adds safety to my Scanoe. I added a ring terminal and crimped it to ground the coil.

Wiring behavior confusing
I've purchased this twice. I need the circuit closed (power on) with the lanyard attached and open when pulled, but I can't get the switch to behave in the orientation I need.
