Marine
HYS Low-Profile VHF Marine Antenna — 156–163 MHz, 5m Cable & PL-259
Product description
Frequency and power: This HYS antenna is designed for the marine VHF band and covers 156–163 MHz — including the 156–158 MHz marine channels and weather at 162 MHz. It offers about 2 dBi of gain and is rated for up to 50 watts, suitable for most mobile marine transceivers.
Compatibility: The antenna terminates in a PL‑259 plug and is intended to mate with radios that have the standard SO‑239 (UHF female) socket. It will work with many popular VHF units such as Uniden UM385BK, Garmin 215 VHF (AIS-capable), iCom and Cobra marine radios, and can receive NOAA weather broadcasts in the 162.400–162.550 MHz range.
Construction and mounting: The radiating element uses a durable rubberized material with an integrated cable and mounting clip for a low-profile fit. It uses vertical polarization and an omni-directional radiation pattern for even coverage around the vessel. The design incorporates a direct ground/lighting protection path at the base.
Cable and connector: Included is a 16.4 ft (5 m) length of RG‑58 low-loss coax with a PL‑259 connector for straightforward hookup to standard mobile VHF installations. The package includes the antenna, cable, and mounting hardware needed for typical installations.
Use case: This antenna is aimed at boaters and mobile operators needing a compact, easy-to-fit VHF solution. It’s well suited to small boats, vehicles or temporary installs where a low-profile antenna and included cable simplify setup.
Pros
- Compact, low-profile form factor
- Includes 5 m RG‑58 cable with PL‑259
- Omni-directional vertical polarization
Cons
- Only 2 dBi gain — modest range boost
- 50 W max power rating
- Mounting bracket may need a gasket for vibration
VerdictA compact, no-frills VHF whip that delivers solid reception and transmission across the marine VHF band and NOAA weather channels. It’s durable enough for small craft, simple to mount and includes a full 5 m RG‑58 cable with PL‑259. Expect modest 2 dBi gain and a 50 W limit — fine for typical mobile use but not for high-power shore stations.

Acceptable with caveats
Antenna transmits and receives acceptably — my measured SWR sits just over 3 at 25 W, which is an improvement over my older LM-150 on the same power. The mounting bracket feels rough and would benefit from a gasket or better finish since vibration can loosen the assembly; take care when fastening. Overall I’ll keep it and will report back after longer exposure to weather.
