Spiced Apple Sausage Morning Wraps

An apple chicken sausage burrito stuffed full of sausage, eggs, peppers, and cheese.

Prepare to be utterly captivated by the most delicious breakfast burritos you’ve ever tasted. These **Apple Sausage Breakfast Burritos** have redefined my morning meals, transforming a simple breakfast into an experience worth savoring. It’s a harmonious blend of slightly cheesy, incredibly fluffy eggs and the star ingredient that truly elevates the entire dish: Aidell’s Chicken Apple Breakfast sausage. This particular sausage isn’t just a component; it’s the foundation of a flavor profile that has me buzzing with new recipe ideas, something quite surprising for someone who typically leans towards sweet breakfast delights like buttermilk pancakes or classic French toast. For years, I avoided breakfast meats, scarred by countless encounters with bland, overly greasy sausages. That all changed the moment I sampled Aidell’s at Macey’s – it was a revelation, perfectly seasoned and wonderfully flavorful.

What sets this sausage apart, making it my current favorite, is its unique secret ingredient: apples. The inclusion of apples introduces a subtle sweetness and a delightful, tiny crunch to the breakfast sausage. This unexpected fruit element doesn’t just add flavor; it balances the savory notes beautifully, creating a taste sensation that pairs absolutely perfectly with the rich, cheesy eggs. It’s a game-changer that makes these burritos unforgettable and distinctly superior to any other breakfast burrito I’ve tried.

As you gather your ingredients for these incredible burritos, you might find yourself inspired to add a side of smoky, perfectly seasoned potatoes. I recall making a batch once that was absolutely divine – smoky and wonderful – but, alas, the exact method escapes my memory. This is the constant challenge and joy of food blogging: every successful dish demands precise measurements and meticulous notes. Without them, even the most brilliant culinary creations can fade from recollection, making it impossible to share those fantastic recipes with you all. So, for today’s masterpiece, I’ve ensured every step and every ingredient is meticulously documented for you to recreate these Apple Sausage Breakfast Burritos with confidence.

The beauty of these breakfast burritos lies not just in their exceptional taste but also in their versatility and convenience. They are a wholesome, satisfying meal that can be enjoyed fresh or prepared in advance, making busy mornings infinitely easier. Imagine waking up to a ready-made, flavorful breakfast that requires minimal effort – that’s the magic these burritos offer. From the perfectly cooked apple chicken sausage to the soft, warm tortillas enveloping a savory mix of eggs, cheese, and sweet peppers, every bite is a delightful fusion of textures and flavors. You can even customize them further with additions like crispy bacon, a dollop of vibrant salsa, or creamy avocado for an extra layer of indulgence. It’s a breakfast solution that caters to both your taste buds and your schedule.

Is Apple Sausage Made With Real Apples?

Yes, absolutely! Apple sausage is indeed made with real apples. The apples are typically finely diced or pureed and incorporated directly into the sausage mixture during the manufacturing process. This isn’t just a flavoring; it’s a key ingredient that provides a distinct sweet and slightly tart flavor profile, along with a subtle texture. The fruit helps to tenderize the meat, keeps it moist, and adds a natural sweetness that beautifully complements the savory spices and richness of the sausage. This combination is what gives apple sausage its unique and appealing taste, differentiating it from traditional breakfast sausages and making it a fantastic choice for recipes like these burritos.

Can Breakfast Burritos Be Made Ahead?

Yes, breakfast burritos are an ideal make-ahead meal! Preparing them in advance is one of their greatest advantages, especially for individuals or families with busy schedules. You can assemble a batch of these delicious burritos on a weekend, or whenever you have some free time, and then store them for quick and easy breakfasts throughout the week. This not only saves precious minutes during hectic mornings but also ensures you have a wholesome and satisfying meal ready to go. They’re the ultimate grab-and-go breakfast choice, eliminating the need for fast food runs or settling for less nutritious options.

How Do You Freeze Breakfast Burritos?

Freezing breakfast burritos is simple and effective for long-term meal prep. Here’s a step-by-step guide to ensure your burritos stay fresh and delicious:

  1. **Cool Completely:** After cooking and assembling your burritos, allow them to cool completely to room temperature. Wrapping warm burritos will create condensation, leading to soggy tortillas and potential freezer burn.
  2. **Individual Wrapping:** Wrap each breakfast burrito individually and tightly in plastic wrap. This acts as a primary barrier against freezer burn.
  3. **Foil (Optional, but Recommended):** For an extra layer of protection, especially if you plan to store them for more than a few weeks, wrap each plastic-wrapped burrito again in aluminum foil.
  4. **Freezer Bag:** Place the individually wrapped burritos into a heavy-duty freezer-safe bag. Squeeze out as much air as possible before sealing to prevent freezer burn. Label the bag with the date.
  5. **Freeze:** Store the burritos in the freezer for up to 2 months.

When you’re ready to enjoy a burrito, simply grab one from the freezer, unwrap it from its plastic and foil (if used), and reheat. You can heat them in the microwave for 1-2 minutes, flipping halfway, or in a preheated oven (around 350°F or 175°C) for 15-20 minutes until heated through and slightly crispy.

Can You Make Burritos With Corn Tortillas?

While flour tortillas are traditionally preferred for burritos due to their size and pliability, you can certainly use corn tortillas if that’s your preference or dietary requirement. However, there are a few considerations:

  • **Size:** Corn tortillas are generally smaller than flour tortillas, which means your burritos will be more compact and might require more tortillas per serving to get the same amount of filling.
  • **Pliability:** Corn tortillas are less pliable and tend to crack when rolled if not prepared correctly. To make them more flexible, always warm them thoroughly before filling. You can do this in a dry skillet over medium heat for 15-30 seconds per side, or briefly in the microwave wrapped in a damp paper towel.
  • **Flavor and Texture:** Corn tortillas offer a distinct corn flavor and a slightly different texture, which some people prefer. They might not hold as much filling or roll as neatly as flour tortillas, but they can still make a delicious and satisfying burrito.

For best results with corn tortillas, don’t overstuff them, and make sure they are very warm and soft before attempting to roll.

It’s a little cheesy, a lot of fluffy eggs and Aidell’s Chicken Breakfast sausage which completely makes the whole meal.

Ingredients

For the Burritos

  • 4 Links Aidell’s Chicken Apple Breakfast Sausage
  • 6 Sweet Peppers (2 red, 2 yellow, 2 orange), chopped
  • 10 Eggs
  • 2 Tablespoons Milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon Kosher Salt, more to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon Pepper
  • 1 Tablespoon Cilantro, chopped
  • 1/4 Cup Green Chile Taco Sauce
  • 1 Cup Velveeta Cheese
  • 8 Fresh Flour Tortillas

Unit System: US Customary

Instructions

  1. Heat a grill pan or medium-sized skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Once the pan is heated, add your breakfast sausage.
  3. Cook until the sausage begins to brown and is cooked through.
  4. Remove the sausage to a cutting board and chop into 1/2 inch pieces.
  5. Add the chopped sweet peppers into the same pan where you cooked the breakfast sausage. The leftover drippings will provide enough fat, replacing any oil you would normally add.
  6. Cook the peppers for a few minutes until they are soft.
  7. Remove the peppers to the cutting board to cool for a moment.
  8. In a medium-large bowl, crack the eggs and discard the shells.
  9. Add the milk, kosher salt, pepper, chopped cilantro, and green chile taco sauce to the eggs.
  10. Whisk until all ingredients are well combined. The milk helps to make the eggs a bit creamier and fluffier (you can omit it if preferred).
  11. Add the Velveeta cheese, chopped sausage, and cooked peppers to the egg mixture.
  12. Whisk again to evenly distribute everything throughout the egg mixture.
  13. Heat a large skillet over high heat.
  14. Add a small drizzle of oil or spray with cooking spray.
  15. Add the egg mixture to the hot pan and let it cook until the bottom and edges are just about set, which will take a few minutes.
  16. Using a rubber spatula or wooden spoon, gently begin moving the eggs around. Push one side over, then the other, gently folding the eggs to cook any uncooked portions. Cook for another minute or until all the eggs are just set. The eggs should appear slightly “undone” or still shiny; if you cook them until everything is completely separated and no longer shiny, they will become dry and hard.
  17. Meanwhile, cook the fresh flour tortillas. Trust me, the fresh, uncooked tortillas that you cook at home are truly superior in taste and texture.
  18. Place a portion of the egg mixture in the center of each warm tortilla and wrap it up tightly.
  19. Serve immediately with an extra drizzle of green taco sauce, some fresh chopped tomatoes, and a sprinkling of fresh cilantro.
