AGK320 Hole Plug Magnet — Hands-Free Welding Backer with Copper Pad (5.5")
Product description
A purpose-built hands-free welding backer designed to speed up hole plug work.
The unit features a pivoting magnetic V-pad base that quickly attaches to curved and flat steel panels. A spring-loaded arm positions a generous copper backing pad directly behind the weld area. The tool measures approximately 5.5 inches in length from tip to tail and is compact enough for tight or hard-to-reach locations.
Construction highlights include a thick copper pad to dissipate heat and reduce sticking to the weld, a durable magnetic base for stable placement, and a long arm that helps protect the magnet from heat damage while supporting the copper backing. Use it to back welds on holes, joints, seams, and gaps in sheet steel for flatter, cleaner welds with less panel distortion.
Pros
- Hands-free operation speeds welding and stabilizes the backing
- Thick copper pad disperses heat and minimizes sticking
- Pivoting magnetic V-pad conforms to curved panels
Cons
- Magnetic grip weakens through heavy paint or undercoating
- Copper end could use improved articulation for awkward angles
- Not intended for very heavy plate work
VerdictThis tool delivers a reliable hands-free solution for filling holes and welding seams on sheet steel. Strong magnets and a pivoting V-pad let it grab curved panels while the spring arm makes placement simple. The thick copper backing absorbs heat and helps prevent the weld from sticking, improving bead control and reducing grinding. Coatings like paint or underseal can weaken the magnetic hold and

Solid performance
Worked very well for the tasks I needed. I’d recommend this to others doing hole plug welding.

Excellent for single-operator welding
Makes filling old drill holes in my van much easier and reduces the need for a second person to hold a copper block. Magnets are strong; be sure to clean any sealant off the contact area and use anti-spatter on the copper pad before welding.

Where has this been all my welding life?
Bought the standard model and it’s become indispensable. Magnets hold extremely well and I used it to fill five holes in an 18GA trailer fender with flawless results. No more juggling a paddle or a penny while welding small holes. Will see a ton of use—wish I’d grabbed one sooner.

Looks well made — eager to use it
Haven’t used this exact model yet but I own similar designs that performed very well. This should free me from holding a copper paddle while welding small holes. Can’t wait to try it on my next project—quality feels solid.

Saved my firewall repair
Previous owner had patched a 10x10 firewall hole with fiberglass mesh and butchered the dash. This tool acted as my outside and under-dash hand while I welded replacement metal. The repair is seamless now. Strong, easy to use, and indispensable for that job.

Very useful, but magnet grip can falter
Great backer for sealing floorpan holes. The magnets could be stronger — they struggle through paint and undercoating. The copper end also could have better articulation; it’s tricky to balance spring tension with certain floor angles.

Simple, effective idea
Worked well for plugging bolt holes with a MIG — straightforward and effective for that purpose.

Wish I’d tried this sooner — excellent backing tool
I don’t leave many reviews, but after years of Stick, MIG and TIG welding this surprised me. The copper pad serves as a backing to prevent burn-through, helps continuity so MIG runs cleaner without spatter, and controls bead overshoot so there’s less grinding. Closed 1/8" gaps that look seamless.
