iFi Zen DAC 3 Desktop DAC (Black Stealth) — Compact Hi‑Res Converter
Product description
Built as a compact desktop component, this Black Stealth model uses a matte black aluminum chassis for a low‑profile, durable finish and a refined feel. The unit is designed to sit on a desk beside a PC, console or media player and features a smooth front volume knob with a coloured LED indicator behind it.
Internally it employs the Burr‑Brown True Native conversion path and supports high‑resolution formats: PCM up to 32‑bit/768kHz, DSD512 and full MQA decoding for studio‑grade files. Outputs include a balanced 4.4mm headphone jack and a 6.3mm single‑ended headphone output on the front, plus RCA line outputs for powered speakers on the rear.
Included in the box is the DAC itself, a USB‑C data cable and quick‑start documentation; a DC barrel power supply is offered separately if you want to use an external adapter. Connectivity is USB‑C for computer and mobile sources; the RCA outputs can feed powered monitors or an amplifier, and the unit is often paired with headphones, IEMs or a small desktop speaker system.
Usability features include PowerMatch (boosts output for harder‑to‑drive headphones), X‑Bass/TrueBass for selectable low‑end enhancement, a Variable/Fixed output switch for preamp operation, and simultaneous balanced/unbalanced outputs for dual listening sessions. The compact footprint fits easily into a typical desktop rig while offering a premium metal build and tactile controls.
Pros
- Wide high‑res format support including MQA and DSD512
- Solid metal build with smooth, precise volume control
- Useful power and bass adjustments for many headphone types
Cons
- External DC supply is sold separately for maximum performance
- Some users report occasional driver or power issues
- Not the largest soundstage compared with higher‑end units
VerdictA compact, well‑built desktop DAC/amp that punches above its class. Its metal chassis, responsive volume control and broad format support deliver clean, musical playback. PowerMatch and X‑Bass/TrueBass add useful flexibility for hard‑to‑drive cans or bass‑light IEMs, while balanced outputs and Burr‑Brown True Native decoding keep noise low. Some users report occasional driver or power quirks, but

Design, usability and bass enhancement shine
Well suited to both IEMs and over‑ear cans; PowerMatch makes a clear difference. With Simgot IEMs and HD599 headphones it improved detail and presence. I particularly enjoy the X‑Bass+ function for adding weight to bright or bass‑light headphones. The Black Stealth finish feels premium.

Excellent cost‑to‑performance and build
Worth stretching for over the brand’s cheaper models. The metal case feels solid and the audio chip supports current hi‑res formats with native MQA. For best results set your playback app to exclusive mode and the front indicator will reflect the file type being played—handy feedback while listening.

One of the strongest desktop DACs around
Neutral, high‑quality processing with an excellent volume control and attractive finish. Setup is simply USB‑C and play. The 4.4mm balanced output is my go‑to and it handles both sensitive IEMs and power‑hungry headphones like the Ananda with authority. X‑Bass adds worthwhile low‑end extension for bass‑light monitors or IEMs.

Balanced, detailed, with a touch of warmth
After six months of daily use I appreciate the tonally even presentation. Bass leans a little warm and textured, mids sit comfortably, and highs are detailed though occasionally a touch grainy. The soundstage is moderately wide with good depth, and dynamics are lively with crisp transients. A hint of saturation appears at peaks, adding a mild coloration that can be pleasant.

Clean, warm and detailed for everyday listening
Exceeded expectations for the money. Sound is clear with a pleasant warmth that suits jazz, classical and vocals. Works well with both powered speakers and headphones; the Variable/Fixed switch, PowerMatch and X‑Bass are practical additions. High‑res and MQA support are welcome extras for a desktop unit.

Outstanding value and musical character
Excellent pairing with Beyerdynamic DT990 32Ω — the combo sounds musical, wide and well defined without harshness. The DAC brings a pleasantly analog timbre that improves perceived midrange clarity and overall engagement. Treble is lively and the soundstage feels open for the class.

Tiny powerhouse — performs well on a desk
After six months on my desk this compact unit impressed. I used the 4.4mm front output for balanced IEMs and ran RCA to bookshelf speakers plus a small sub. Powered from a USB hub it still sounded excellent; clarity and control are very good and the volume knob is precise for quick adjustments.

Persistent crackling after a few weeks
Worked great initially, but after a month I began to hear crackling across games, music and voice apps. Sometimes restarting the PC fixes it briefly. I tried different power sources, drivers, firmware and even a full OS reinstall without resolving the issue. Frustrating when it happens during calls or multi‑app use.

A revelation — far better than expected
I wish I'd found this sooner. Paired with Sennheiser HD600 the clarity and depth were stunning — easily rivaled much pricier DACs. Engaging TrueBass added punch without smearing mids or highs. The brushed metal case and buttery volume control feel premium. Front and rear balanced/unbalanced connections and USB‑C work straight away; a DC barrel supply can be added for extra headroom.

More power than you'd expect
Bought it to drive ATH‑M50X and was impressed — the balanced output elevates neutral headphones. It also managed DT 770 Pro 250Ω without struggle. Firmware updates are recommended for console users, but overall it’s a powerful and reliable desktop amp/DAC for the money.

Great sound — power supply matters
Two months in I learned the hard way that many phone chargers and USB‑to‑barrel cables won’t provide enough current. Use a proper 5V, ~2.5A UL‑rated DC wall wart with a 5.5×2.1mm plug for the best volume and dynamics. Once powered correctly the unit’s signature and X‑Bass deliver satisfying low‑end impact—well worth the extra attention to power.

Features that genuinely change the experience
PowerMatch and TrueBass proved more useful than I anticipated. This replaced my previous amp/DAC and delivers enough power for HIFIMAN Sundara headphones — it gets loud fast without strain. It can drive both balanced and single‑ended outputs at once, which is handy for sharing. I run it over USB to my PC and the build quality inspires confidence.
