Paul Rubens Squirrel-Hair Watercolor Mop Brush — Size 4 Round
Product description
Plush natural squirrel hair: This brush is made from exceptionally soft, high-absorbency squirrel hair so it can carry large volumes of water and paint. The fiber’s softness lets the brush lay pigment smoothly across paper without obvious hair tracks, making it suitable for wash and mop methods.
Secure metal ferrule and finished handle: The brush has a metal ferrule engineered to mechanically lock the bristles to the handle, and the short wooden handle is coated in a clear protective glaze for a comfortable, sealed grip.
Size and dimensions: Supplied as Size 4, the brush measures 4.2inch (19.8cm) in overall length. The head is generously shaped and hand-formed to provide full, sweeping strokes while still tapering to a fine tip for delicate lines.
Gift-style packaging and contents: Each brush ships in an elegant black gift box that doubles as storage and presentation — a ready gift for artists. Included is the single Size 4 squirrel-hair mop brush.
Usage and care notes: Ideal for watercolor washes, large gouache or acrylic passages, and soft oil glazing where a soft, water-holding belly is desired. Because the brush contains factory sizing, a careful initial cleaning and occasional conditioning will help maintain tip formation and minimize early loose hairs.
Customer support: The maker backs product quality and offers to resolve issues if you are unhappy or encounter defects; reach out to the seller for assistance and a promised resolution.
Pros
- High absorbency from natural squirrel hair
- Fine taper for both washes and detail
- Sturdy ferrule and comfortable glazed handle
Cons
- May shed a few hairs during initial use
- Needs a good first cleaning to remove factory sizing
- Short handle may not suit all painting grips
VerdictThis round mop brush is designed for artists who need generous water and pigment capacity with a delicate tip for finer lines. The natural squirrel hair provides excellent absorption and a soft laydown, while the ferrule and glazed handle aim to keep the tool stable in use. It’s well suited to washes, large areas and occasional detail work; some users note an initial break-in period for stray hair

Upgraded to a bigger size and still pleased
Hobbyist user here — I’d owned the Size 4 for years and bought a Size 6. The larger brush holds a lot more paint and felt lovely on my first use. Only one short hair needed trimming and I haven’t experienced shedding since. I’ll report back if anything changes, but so far both sizes are favorites.

Attractive brush that keeps its shape
This brush holds plenty of water and pigment for broad washes yet narrows to a neat point for smaller areas. The head keeps its form and the hairs stay intact. Quality construction and comfortable in the hand — worth acquiring.

Holds water well and balanced to use
Very good brush — it stores a useful amount of water without being unwieldy, and it sits nicely in the hand for controlled strokes.

Expensive but very capable
More costly than some others I’ve owned, but it loads a lot of paint and is versatile for heavy strokes or thin lines. It forms a good point and handles well.

A dependable, soft mop brush
I’ve used this for about two months with no issues. No noticeable hair loss, soft, absorbent, and it glides across paper. Feels like a keeper.

Some initial shedding but still usable
Natural hair brushes can shed, and this one did a bit on day one — likely loose glue or sizing. After the first uses it settled, though it didn’t keep a perfect point for fine lettering. Comfortable in hand and excellent for background washes. The packaging made the unboxing special.

Well-made mop brush packaged like a present
A solid pick for the money — the brush arrives in an attractive black box and is protected inside. The Size 4 carries water and pigment well, the short handle is comfortable, and the ferrule holds bristles firmly. The head reaches a fine point and performs across a range of strokes. I’d like matching smaller sizes, but this single brush is useful on its own.

Very absorbent, larger than expected
New to watercolor, I found this numbered size larger than other rounds I own. It takes some getting used to but is excellent for laying down washes due to its high water capacity.

Great for large washes and fine lines
The No. 6 I tried is ideal for sweeping backgrounds and still forms a fine tip for lines. Nice fat belly holds pigment without stray hairs. Be sure to clean it well at first to remove sizing. The box is a nice extra — I’d buy it again.
